Hoosiermama Posted September 13, 2006 #1 Share Posted September 13, 2006 I'm going on my first cruise to New England and Canada in October. I'll be on the Constellation, and I was wondering if it will be possible to see the land from the ship when we are out in the ocean. Are we going to be cruising too far out to see the coast? How about with binoculars? Thanks! Kathy
MarylandLady Posted September 13, 2006 #2 Share Posted September 13, 2006 I've done the NY to New England/Canada cruise twice. Until we get close to port, we've been too far out to see land. Also the North Atlantic can get fairly foggy so even if we were close at times, you couldn't see past the fog. Don't know about binoculars working on a clear day -- never took any. But they were wonderful trips -- enjoy! :)
barbarah33 Posted September 13, 2006 #3 Share Posted September 13, 2006 I don't recall being able to see land - they take you pretty far out when you cruise from port to port.
kitty9 Posted September 13, 2006 #4 Share Posted September 13, 2006 Since 9/11, cruise ships have to follow new rules as to how far they must cruise from land, so they are quite a distance away from land. Can't even use binoculars.
Hoosiermama Posted September 13, 2006 Author #5 Share Posted September 13, 2006 Thanks for the answers everyone! I hadn't really thought about how far out the ship would be until my mom asked me last night. Many years ago she did a similiar cruise on a much smaller ship and she stayed pretty close to shore. I'm sure it's going to be a wonderful first cruise and I am getting pretty excited!! First cruise AND first time visiting that part of our country!! nybumpkin Posted September 14, 2006 #7 Share Posted September 14, 2006 The shore's not within view - but you're close enough that you'll see sea birds and occasional dolphins. We didn't see dolphins on our last Canada cruise, but we did in 2004. Enjoy your cruise!
superbonnie Posted September 15, 2006 #8 Share Posted September 15, 2006 We were on a Canada cruise a few years ago in early Oct and I was so glad I had my binoculars because we were able to see a great pod of whales from our balcony. If not for the binoculars we would have missed them.

SailBadtheSinner Posted September 16, 2006 #10 Share Posted September 16, 2006 When I posted my first reply, the thread had been started on the Ask a Cruise Question forum but has since been moved here. I know I have senior moments, but I was concerned that I had really lost it. SBtS
