This is something I have never heard of before...my condolences to the family of this unfortunate diver.

Fish Kills Spear-Fishing Diver

MIAMI (Sept. 12) - A Florida diver shot a large grouper with a spear gun then apparently drowned when the fish sped into a hole, entangling the man in the line attached to the spear, investigators said Monday.

The 42-year-old man, whose name was withheld, was free-diving in about 25 feet of water off the lower Florida Keys Saturday and speared a Goliath Grouper, Monroe County Sheriff's Detective Mark Coleman said.

"It looks like the fish wrapped the line attached to the spear around the victim's wrist. The fish then went into a hole in a coral rock, effectively pinning the man to the bottom of the ocean," Coleman said in a news release.

Police divers found the speared fish tightly wedged into the hole, with the man's body still tangled in the line, a sheriff's spokeswoman said.

Goliath Grouper are the largest members of the sea bass family and can weigh hundreds of pounds.

I thought Goliath Grouper were protected...sounds like he didn't know what he was doing. Why wouldn't you Snorkel with a Knife if you were going to be spear fishing? very sad....But like the Article said GG can get huge...I know people diving off our coast and have seen 6-10ft GG at the wrecks.

I live in the Gulf and spearfish--here they can get as big as a voltswagen--never--never mess with them and against the law.

He did alot of wrong things which caused his death. It is sad but some people aren't very bright when it comes to rules.

I guess you should be careful about what you shoot at.

Condolences to the family, but I have to admit I'm with Bruce here.

Darwin award candidate perhaps.

It's not a wise idea to shoot anything you can't out-swim.

Goliath groupers are protected - it's the new, politically correct common name for what used to be called the Jewfish.
