Patch Nelson Posted September 20, 2006 #1 Share Posted September 20, 2006 But my wife and I are toying with the idea of a winter 07 cruise, probably around the Norway area, with the intention of seeing Aurora Borealis (should it choose to make an appearance). Has anyone been on such a cruise or can anyone make any suggestions as to the best ones to look at?
guernseyguy Posted September 20, 2006 #2 Share Posted September 20, 2006 There are very few cruises to Norway in the winter - most ships have either gone to the Caribbean or sail south, not north. There is however, the Norwegian Coastal Ferry - the Hurtigruten- the modern vessels have the appointments of modern cruise ships (minus the Las Vegas bits - i.e., no shows) and wonderful scenery. I did the 11 day round trip in October and saw the Aurora Borealis - stunning (and very cold!). Just google Hurtigruten and you'll find links appropriate for your location. smeyer418 Posted September 20, 2006 #4 Share Posted September 20, 2006 I have seen the aurora. In Canada in the summer. I also think you can see it in August in Alaska...
Kindlychap Posted September 20, 2006 #5 Share Posted September 20, 2006 The Hurtigruten is something that is very different to a conventional cruise. I have done Kirkenes to Bergen on MS Midnatsol, which was a stunning trip. Food far from Queens Grill, but more than adequate. Ship is completely without entertainment. Norway itself provides that. Midnatsol has some nice suites at the back, and the normal cabins are fine too - my mother had one and was very happy with it. But obviously, you'll need to make sure you've seen Norway from QE2 too. Patch Nelson Posted September 21, 2006 Author #6 Share Posted September 21, 2006 Many thanks for the suggestions ... there does seem to be a dearth of 'proper cruises' for trips like this, perhaps not everyone is as barmy as me and wants to freeze themselves to see lights in the sky! I've found an interesting site which is appears to be something of a 'ferry' trip along the coast stopping off to do dog sledding etc which seems quite good, albeit rather pricey for just a week.
