Does anyone know if we will need Mexican money in Zihuatenejo? Have never been there,on other cruises all the locals would take U.S. currency,but you might get local in change.That,s ok

In my experience in Mexico you can use either usd or pesos. Most ports price things in dollars. Do whatever you are comfortable with. Remember most do not take credit cards or travellers checks so cash them in on board the ship.

In addition, I always figure the exchange rate to be 10x1. While that won't be exact, it's close enough for one's everyday spending.

 

If you are making a purchase in a regular store, and of course this is going to be dependent on what you're buying, I wouldn't give the cashier anything larger than a $20. If you're buying something from a stall or beach vendor, I'd suggest having several $5s & lots Of $1s.

That's why they like it so much when you pay in dollars - they're making off with a few extra pesos.

 

We always take pesos out of the ATM at the beginning of our trips, but that's just us. You don't have to. All the prices are in pesos, so it makes it easier too.

We'll second that idea, and it's what we do. Check my posting in this (much) older thread. The numbers may have changed a little, but I believe the concept is still valid.

Not everyone will accept US$, though if you're only going to frequent heavily touristed places, than US$ should suffice. Since you'll be stopping in several ports, why not just get some pesos.
