Alcohol question

I have read on these boards many times about cruise passengers smuggling their own liquor on board. My question is this - If you smuggle liquor on board and then do not drink all of it, do you have to declare that same liquor if you decide to brink it back into the States? What's the skinny on this?

A customs declaration relates to items purchased on the ship and in foreign ports, not on what you smuggled onboard and did not finish. Obviously, you would not declare something that you had purchased prior to your cruise.

Theoretically, if your bags were searched and they found open liquor bottles, you would have some issues with Customs if you could not prove where the liquor was purchased.

If you're intent on smuggling liquor, I would say just bring SMALL bottles and drink it onboard. Don't try and bring it OFF the ship.

We brought a bunch of small, airport size bottles on board and ended up not finishing them (didn't feel like going back to the cabin every time we wanted a drink), so we just brought them back off. I had them in my carry-on bag and it wasn't an issue. Hubby and I are major drinkers, so we thought we'd save money bringing our own, but we definitely brought more than we could use. Plan wisely because if you're up by the pool, or down in the casino, you're not likely to go back up to your room for every drink. You probably won't need to bring a lot with you :)
