Not 'Dressing Up' for Formal Night

Maybe I missed something, but I don't think the OP was asking if they could go to the dining room not dressed up on formal night... they said they didn't want to and were going to "do their own thing", but now people are trying to convince them to go not dressed up, even though one of their concerns about not doing the dining room was that "they would stick out like sore thumbs"... hmm. Sounds like they don't want to do the formal night thing, dressed up or not... and NOT dressed up, yes, they would somewhat stick out.

OP, do your own thing... you won't be disappointed, you won't stick out... many others will be doing their own thing as well...

You are right........I wasn't asking if it's ok to go to dinner on formal night 'not dressed up'.........I don't plan on going to the dining room at all. We would just roam around the ship, eat on the Lido deck, etc. I knew alot of people would be in formal attire and I wouldn't, so that's what I was curious about and curious if a lot of other passengers choose not to participate in the formal nights.

GoinCruisin,

I agree with you.

The OP clearly stated her desire not to participate and yet the discussion drifts into recommendations that they go anyway, formal photo's and food that I guess they can't eat at home. Clearly, their agenda's and not hers! :D LOL!!!

MzBiggs,

I'm glad you're not being swayed. You prefer to dine casually and "do you own thing" while not disrespecting the formal dining room dress code. I applaud your consideration to fellow passengers who chose to partake and have a formal night.

I think that whether you stand out in casual attire in other parts of the ship, like the casino or the showrooms, depends on which ship you're on. From what I read on this board, it seems that more than just a few people change into more casual clothing after haviing a formal dinner in the dining room.

Have a wonderful cruise.

a lot of people change into casual clothes after formal nite dinner.. especially if they feel they've eaten too much and the clothes are tight.. lol i've seen men go from tux to shorts and women from gowns to jeans or something equally as casual.. on princess , rci, celebrity, and HAL.. besides there will be people who have eaten at the buffet on formal nite and they wouldn't have been dressed up to begin with.. so you won't be the only one to be 'casual' on formal nites. the daily papers suggest you stay 'formal' the entire evening however i'm sure passengers dining at the buffet do not dress in formal attire for the lido.. i must say the casino always looks nice on formal nites with gowns and tux at the crap tables and roulette tables :)

Yes, there are a lot of folks that don't adhere to the dress code. Both Celebrity and HAL state for "ALL public areas they request you to adhere

to the evenings dress code".

That had me worried for the HAL Alaska cruise next year, as my husband won't dress up. But if he has to stay in the cabin and order room service, so be it. I plan to dress up and attend dinner in the dining room.

I just returned from New England/Canada cruise on Celebrity Constellation, and most of the people did adhere to the dress code. There were a few that didn't, but the majority were formal on formal nights, and stayed that way until at least midnight when I saw them.

Caribbean cruises may tend to be less formal, I've only done a three day cruise out of Puerto Rico, but if I recall, on formal nights, everyone pretty much stayed in their formal attire and that was on Empress of The Seas (RCL).

You will have to decide if you feel uncomfortable, or if you feel you are the only ones not dressed formally, and go with that. If you see others and it isn't bothering you, hey, it's your vacation. Dress the way you want. That's what my husband is going to do. He doesn't even own a suit or sport jacket, let alone a tux. But he doesn't care. Have a great cruise.:D

To the original poster:

My own opinion is that if you are neat and clean and dressed in some reasonable fashion, then that's considered appropriate when in a more formal setting.

If you dress in shorts and a tshirt, orripped jeans, etc. then you will stand out as a slob, only because everyone else will be dressed in a more formal manner than you. On the converse, you could wear the same ripped jeans, shorts and/or tshirt to a buffet line for breakfast and lunch and you wouldn't come across as a slob because everyone else around you might be dressed in a similar fashion.

Only my opinion. I'm with you, I get tired of wearing professional clothes to work, and don't care to dress up for a formal night on a cruise. But I suck it up and figure one night isn't going to kill me so I go with it.
