Myra, i'm the same way. I'm not a breakfast eater. Mainly toast when I can find time to grab a piece at school.

Everyone tells me i'll love being retired. My DD is expecting my first grandbaby in March, so i'm excited! They live in SC, so I am looking to move down to that area. Where is Rockingham?

Have a happy birthday! Us November people are the best!!!!

Congratulations on the grand baby. I have six of them..we live about 20 miles or less from the SC border 'Great to have you move down this way. You will love the weather. Yesterday was the first day it was not in the 70's. Sounds like you are a teacher. I also taught high school as well as being a registered nurse. Looking forward to meeting you.

Myra, thank you! I am so excited about the upcoming birth of my Granddaughter! My DD is in Columbia, and i'm leaning towards Charleston, but i've also looked in the Rock Hill ? area. It's right on the SC/NC boarder on the hwy that goes down to Columbia - 77?

I originally was a teacher (Biology), but for the past 26 years or more, i've been a counselor in a HS.

what did you teach?

Perhaps we'll get to meet one day on a cruise or in the carolinas!

I vote for Charleston....lol. I love that city or even Mt. Pleasant. Not very close to Columbia though. Most people I know love Rock Hill. That is right near Charlotte.

I taught Anatomy and Physiology. It was fun because it was an elective and my students wanted to be there. My sister taught Biology for 30+ years.

This diet is hard. I am going to search on Sat. for legal foods.

Myra, I have the same problem, which I share as I sit here eating cadbury's chocolate roll cake from England. I have gained 15 lbs since my last cruise, none of my winter clothes fit and I can't stop eating sweets! I have no will power.

I need duct tape!!!!!

Cruisin....you have to read the ingredients to see if something has gluten in it. Most bread products do unless they say Gluten free. Flour is the big problem there.

Myra, what brand was the bread you found?

Cheryl, The bread is Kinnikinnick Sunflower, flax and rice bread. I found it in the frozen section of the health foods store. Very pricey. My husband tasted it and said yuk.....but I actually like it. I have not cheated but need more exercise. Will keep trying. I need to lose 40 lbs. Your chocolate sounds wonderful. A "friend" just sent me a recipe for a 5 minute chocolate cake in a mug. What are friends for????????????? Myra

  • 2 weeks later...

I find this subject very interesting... I haven't read ALL 34 pages yet, but have scanned quite a few at the front, and more current... There is a lot about "blue corn" chips... Are Yellow Corn chips and White Corn chips OK too....? What is it with Blue Corn chips? Thanks!!

I don't know the answer. I'm thinking maybe it has something to do with the blue ones not having any gluten in them?

The diet does work if you stick to it.

I've decided to give this diet a try as I'm sick of feeling tired as soon as I eat and I think cutting out gluten might help with that. Figured if I'm gonna change my whole diet to cut out one thing I might as well cut sugar out too.

Went shopping today for healthy food but made the mistake of taking my little sister with me. Now as well as veggies, rice, oats etc we also have sugar-coated popcorn, chocolate crepes, toffees, jelly and custard, biscuits and cookie dough ice cream. Sigh, so much temptation. Think this diet might be hard for me to follow anyway as no one in my house cooks, my mum even throws most of the useful cooking utensils away, and my dad and sister pretend to throw up if they see any veggies in the fridge.

I'm going to give it my best shot though. I'll try to check in from time to time as I think feeling accountable to the board might help with those 'sod this, i need ice cream!' moments ;)

Mirrikh, You can do it. It really is not to hard once you get the jest of it. I am 3 weeks into it tomorrow and have lost over 8 lbs. My hardest lost is the bread but now I have found a substitute. I even lost .6 lb. on Thanksgiving. No dressing or casseroles or cranberry jelly. I am working out more and drinking water more. I am sticking with it.

Cheryl. My holiday was great. I cooked for 18 and held on to the woe. I am proud. How was your Thanksgiving? Everyone is decorating for Christmas but I am not getting into it yet. Usually I am the first to do it. Must be getting old. I'll get there. Myra

Good luck Miriikh! Are you from the UK?

Myra, Thanksgiving was nice because my DD and SIL arrived from SC! It was a bad eating weekend and dinner tonight was about 2 doz. chocolate cookies and nothing else! I am totally out of control. Congrats to you on the 8 lbs!!:D:):D

WOW, am I glad to find this thread! I've been so frustrated with the bloat, sugar cravings, binge eating & sluggishness that have come out of the blue now that I am officially menopausal.

I've spent over an hour reading all 34 pages of this tread and I feel like I've been slapped in the face by bardgal-- and I mean that in a good way!!:D

Thing is, I already know for a fact that this way of eating works for me because I had been gluten/wheat & sugar-free just 2 short years ago. I felt lighter, cleaner, healthier and had major energy back then, even in the midst of perimenopause. Unfortunately, I got lazy. Pure & simple.

And once I put the sugary, gluten filled foods back into my system, (in the form of delicious on board desserts at any hour of the day and night), :)-- all bets were off and I was on a free-fall. I kept saying things like: "I'll stop tomorrow." "Just one more." "It's just a small piece of cake" "I'll work out in the gym harder tomorrow", etc. What a load of hooey!!

Truth is, it's a simple choice. Do I want to be fit & slim & full of energy--not to mention healthy-- OR, do I want to have a few seconds of sugar-coated pleasure when the sugar is on my tongue? I can't have both.

SO--- I make a choice and then commit to maintaining my decision-right?

Easily said, I know. So now, the rubber meets the road and I'm on my way. I'm sure there will be temptations, especially as I watch my partner eat his delicious desserts across the table from me. But I'll be pleased with a bowlful of berries - and thrilled to be bloat-free and ready to go to the casino or a show rather than straight to sleep after dinner.

Thanks to all on this thread for encouraging me to take a stand on getting healthy again.

Delila-lu, good for you! I am now at the point I can't fit into any of my work clothes and I still keep shoving the sugar in my mouth. I don't know how to stop any more. I am so exhausted and dragging and bloated. I feel like a balloon about to burst.

Good luck!

Come on girls....I KNOW if I can do it, you can. We eat out A LOT and that is a bit difficult at times. I now know what I can eat in most places. How I do miss a good old juicy hamburger!!!!! I am finding portion control much easier now. Still need more exercise.

Looking forward to hearing all your success stories. Let's do thid together. Myra

Myra, no will power here. I'm out of control and can't seem to get a grip. I feel like a food aholic :( I can't stop and now I can longer fit into any of my school clothes. I hate that I am this out of control and uncomfortable, but I can't seem to stop the pattern.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Cheryl

Yes, Cheryl, I have certainly experienced that same out of control feeling and could not seem to stop. I understand it completely. I have to do a complete mind set change. So much for me is mental. I also get discouraged easily. I hope to continue on my present woe for a while. I know I will go off on our next cruise in Jan. But still will come back to the woe. Starting my 4th week...hard to believe. Myra

Hi again-- yes Cheryl- I've been frustrated by my lack of control-- I've spent many times "on automatic" shoveling donuts or cookies into my mouth, knowing full well I would feel lousy afterwards. It's a real depressing cycle.

BUT- it's a matter of mind over matter. How badly do I want to be healthy, slim and full of energy? Really. Would I rather enjoy momentary pleasure in the form of a donut? Well- sometimes the answer is yes-- yes I do. The turning point comes when I make a decision to REFRAIN from impulses in the form of habitual eating/cravings. Because if I beat myself up with guilt & depression afterwards, is it really worth it??

So- next time the craving hits- take a walk, Drink a huge glass of water with lemon in it. Talk aloud and ask for help to get through the next 15 minutes without caving into the impulse. Staying active has been a lifesaver for me.

And when I stumble (and give into the impulse) I try to stay positive and try harder next time.

I'm comfortable with prayer & I've definitely prayed for the strength to keep focused on my goals of heath & vitality ;)
