Hi

Just wondering if it is worth going to the perfume factory and can you walk to it from the cruise port.

Stephanie:)

Just a bump and the same questions...

Is it fun? Can you really make your own perfume? Is it walkable from the cruise ship pier?

Yes, you can mix your own perfume, no you can't walk to it. It's at the International Bazaar downtown about 10 minutes by taxi from the cruise ship. Not sure if it's fun - I'm allergic - but it's been around a long time so someone must be doing it.

Thanks for the info! Looks like its something to see if you happen to be down at the IB.

I'm just posting this here from my full review on my cruise on the Sky.

The Perfume Factory is a "must see".

One historical icon that still stands at the International Bazaar is the Perfume Factory. Its history goes back being founding in 1969 by Albert Whisnant, later sold to Peter and Patricia Aston in 1976, and since Mr. Aston’s death in 1993, is now ran by Mrs. Aston and daughter Chrisanne, but you can read all about that on their website. In brief, it’s a free standing building that appears to be a replica of an old Bahamian Mansion. Inside, your nose will be delighted with an exotic dance of refreshing delightful fragrances coming from tropical perfumes, lotions, oils and soaps. The friendly staff will be grateful you came and more than happy to escort you throughout the premises for a tour. If you are so inclined, you can sit down before a myriad of essential oils and create your very own fragrance, which you will hand mix and create yourself. For a very reasonable fee, you will leave with 1.5oz of your signature scent and a certificate of registry for your formula. It may sound very kitschy, but I spent my afternoon taking the tour, creating my fragrance and speaking with Chrisanne (daughter of the Astons). No doubt this lovely woman has given this tour hundreds, no thousands of times, but by her demeanor with me, I would have sworn it was one of her first. Her excitement and joy in helping someone understand fragrances was contagious. So I simply had to create my own. Make the time to visit the Perfume Factory. If Chrisanne is there, please tell her that I said hello.

mind if i ask what the reasonable fee is?

The fee is a very reasonable $30 when you consider you not only get a 1.5oz perfume of your fragrance. (Or a lotion if you like.) It's also the entire experience of creating and manufacturing it yourself.

The first part in the process is designing your fragrance! They will seat you before a delightful array of essential oils. There are florals, fruits and musks along with traditional combinations. Some of which some you will recognize and some are more exotic. You can smell them all and choose three. They have a small jar of coffee beans to smell to clear your sinus' between fragrances. I knew I wanted "gardenia" and musk", but I also wanted something "spicy", so the expert on hand was Chrisanne (daughter of the Aston's) gave me a hand in the direction I was wanting to go. Having found my "spicy third", we set off to the essential oils lab.

In this part of the lab, you'll see all the individual essential oils on glass racks. Chrisanne asked what I wanted to be my "nose forward" scent. I told her I wanted it spicy and musky, with a soft undertone of the gardenia. So she determined the formula and had me draw down a measured amount. My creation still needed some more pizazz, so we went back and added a few more drops of the gardenia and the musk. She wanted me to be happy and have my fragrance be exactly what I wanted, and was more than willing to accommodate my tweaking.

Once the oil combination was right, we proceeded to mixing. This involved adding alcohol and blending the oils with the alcohol on this magnetic mixing machine.

When my fragrance was perfect, we bottled it! And I received a "Certificate of Mixology". The fee includes naming your fragrance, and registering the formula. Should you want to reorder, they have the formula on hand.

It was a wonderful experience on its own. Combine it with chatting with Chrisanne and hearing the history of the Perfume Factory, along with some interesting details about essential oils...and it was not only a well spent $30, but a very well spent hour.

If you go, be sure to let me know how you enjoyed it!:D
