cruisinonmymind Posted July 18, 2004 #1 Share Posted July 18, 2004 I posted this on the POC thread too, but not much activity there. For you Tampa residents, what beach do you recommend for just playing in the waves/swimming? We are staying at the Hyatt Regency Tampa on Tampa St and would like something easy to find. Thanks in advance BTW, need info quick, we leave Wednesday
TVMet Posted July 18, 2004 #2 Share Posted July 18, 2004 There aren't any good beaches on the Tampa side. There is the Ben T. Davis beach on the Courtney Campbell Causeway near the airport. But, I wouldn't recommend it. The best beaches are in Pinellas County. Clearwater Beach is one of the best in the country, plenty to do there. If you like things a little calmer, go just to the south to Sand Key park. Wide, open and uncrowded. Also in Pinellas, try St. Pete Beach, Mad. Beach, or Fort Desoto at the southern tip of Pinellas. Cruising89143 Posted July 18, 2004 #3 Share Posted July 18, 2004 Clearwater beach is your best bet. As stated, Tampa really does not have any nice beaches at all.
cruisingcouple2001 Posted July 18, 2004 #4 Share Posted July 18, 2004 I agree. Clearwater Beach is very nice, as is Sand Key. They are within minutes of each other, so try both. More restaurants and shops on Clearwater Beach. Not far from Tampa either.
FishyTrishy Posted July 18, 2004 #5 Share Posted July 18, 2004 Clearwater beach is beautiful. I lived on Treasure Island in Pinellas county for a while and it's public beach is wonderful and not as crowded as Clearwater beach.
Sea Turtle Posted July 18, 2004 #6 Share Posted July 18, 2004 Tampa doesn't have beaches. As others have indicated Clearwater Beach is the closest nice beach, and is an easy drive (non-rush hour) from Tampa Hyatt. Don't expect any waves though unless a storm is brewing offshore. Clearwater is on the Gulf, which is known for being 'lake like'. Regardless, the sand is smooth, and the water will be warm. It's a great beach for swimming and walking. Enjoy your visit and cruise!
