I don't know what condition your car is in. Our van was parked for 27 days when we did a B2B We had no trouble. Al

I think this depends on the condition of your car and the weather conditions at the port. We've left our car for as long as 11 days at a pier and for as long as 17 days at an airport when we flew to a cruise. We had no problems. However, this was in warm weather months.

I once flew to Europe on a business trip for 6 days in the winter. When I got back to the airport, my car had a dead battery. This was in December and the car was about 5 years old. Needless to say the battery was weak. But since I was parked in a pay lot it was easy to get a jump start and be on my way.

We have a 14 day cruise scheduled in October, 2007 out of San Diego on the Summit. We will be going a day or two early. Our car will be in the airport lot for 15-16 days. I do not expect any problems.

Enjoy Hawaii.

We live in Canada, but routinely fly out of Detroit Metro for our trips. As we generally travel in the winter, we hate leaving one of our cars in a lot for two weeks. We've returned in the past to find it buried under a glacier of Michigan-in-January snow!

We have solved the problem by hiring a driver from a local shuttle service. It's a bit of an indulgence, but he picks us up at our home, carries the luggage, and delivers us to the front door of the airport. The real bonus for us is on our return, the driver is waiting for us with a sign with our name on it (we feel like movie stars!:D ), and he escorts us to a nearby (warm!) car. Our vehicles stay warm and dry and safe in the garage at home. It's worth every penny!

Have you considered renting a car one way in each direction? Many times the car rental, even with one-way drop charge, can cost less than paying for parking. Plus it saves the wear and tear on your own car.

But the best reason of all for using a rental car on a long trip is that if you should have car trouble, when you rent from a major company it is not your problem. They bring you out another car (equivalent or better), exchange cars, and you are on your way. If you are driving your own car and it breaks down along the way, you are stuck with a major headache.

Just plan to allow sufficient time for possible complications on your way to a cruise port, whether driving your own car, hiring a driver, renting, or whatever. (I guess the exception would be if you use the cruise line's own transportation.)

Renting really worked out well for us on a vacation last summer. We rented a mid-sized sedan for two weeks. When we went to pick up the car in Las Vegas, they were all out of sedans so they gave us a minivan. Two days later, we were up in Utah and the air conditioner quit. We called the 800 number and they brought us out a Chrysler 300. We had the Chrysler 300 for the rest of our trip, for the price of a mid-sized sedan.

On another trip, when they were out of sedans in Portland, Oregon, we got a Sebring convertible. It was wonderful driving the Pacific Coast highway along the Oregon coast with the top down. There is great peace of mind just knowing that you don't have to worry about getting stuck somewhere or having major repair bills if you run into car trouble on a vacation.

We left our car parked for 15 days at Chicago, in January, when we flew to Hawaii and had no problem. After 14 days in Hawaii, my car handled the cold temperature a lot better than I did!

Fleckle,

Great idea about renting a car one way to the airport. I just might try that next trip. Thanks.

thank you all for your responses.. yeah we would rather drive our own car than renting one, but i will look into that

our car is an 2004 chevy trailblazer only like 20k miles. so its still like new ,

but i was just worried about the elements of leaving it there. for 14 days

it seems like it would be ok though.....

thank you all again

It sounds like you're leaving out of either Los Angeles or San Diego for your cruise. Weather at either pier shouldn't be an issue. It may rain, but really won't be that cold. We've left our car many times at Park 'N Fly lots, and never had any problems, and this was for 16 days. So go....enjoy, and have a wonderful cruise!

We are on the same cruise as you. We will be driving down from LA area and parking also. We've never had any problems in San Pedro / Long Beach about leaving the car for up to 15 days. Really, my only concern would be theft. I'd hate to see my XJ8 ending up in TJ! Lots of cars end up south-of-the-border... Heck, it is insured ... I wouldn't stress it.

We left our car in the long distance lot at Chicago O'Hare for over 3 weeks in December a couple of years ago and it was fine. We are also on the same cruise as you. I think this time we will probably take a cab to the airport and back. They have raised the price of the long term parking lots and it would be expensive to leave our car there that long although it was very convenient.

Like Trey, we are on the same cruise as you. When we don't fly and leave from Miami or Ft. Lauderdale we rent a car the same as fleckle. It usually is cheaper to rent a car than paying the parking charges. Another thing we like about renting is it helps make it less obvious that no one is at home by having the car in the drive or carport in our case.

Here's a link giving parking cost for San Diego. I hope is helps you.
