Noordan Dress Code clarification please!

Will my BIL be scowled at if he's not in "formal attire" at the casino on formal night?

Hello, Pam.

"Scowled At"? Hmmm ... well, that may depend upon what he is wearing and who it is doing the "scowling." Most people would never scowl to his face, but a few might well be taken aback if he's wandering around the Casino in shorts and t-shirt on formal night (not to mention that he would be quite conspicuous if so-dressed on formal night). So ... what is it he's thinking about wearing?

Please remind your BIL that, on HAL "Formal Attire" isn't actually required on Formal Night ... HAL's Dress Code states that, if a gentleman doesn't wish to wear a Tuxedo or a Business Suit, he is welcome to wear a jacket and tie. On some cruises I've noted quite a few men opting for this, and many of them manage to look quite smart so-attired.

I was just wondering ...if they decided to have dinner in their cabin on one of the formal nights and then later in the evening wanted to go to the casino for a bit, (or a show) would they have to don their formals (tux/gown) anyway??

He was thinking about wearing slacks and a shirt to the casino..maybe a jacket. Shorts..NEVER!! (not even on casual/informal nights/or pretty much anywhere other than the beach or pool.)

They both do dress up as suggested for cruising but have never sailed HAL. Truly, they would feel out of place if everyone else were dressed up at dinner. (Don't think the casino cares how you dress as long as they get your money!!)

Sadly, some of the attire we saw on recent cruises leaves one to wonder what some people's interpretations of the word "formal" mean.....thanks!

I would suggest slacks, shirt, and jacket on formal night if going out later to play in the Casino. As you said, the Casino doesn't care so long as they have your money. :) However, with a jacket on he will not stand out or feel out of place as he would if he were in just in shirt-sleves. Most men will still have, at least, a jacket on after dinner. I have noticed that, even many of those who "dress down" after dinner, will just limit that to taking off their tie between the dining room and the "entertainment side" of the ship.

There's no reason to wear a Tuxedo on such an occasion. :)

Thanks again. I've also been following the dining thread and other bits of HAL (Noordam) info. Of course my sister will get around to reading the docs one of these days!! They go right after you..on the 1/17 sailing.

Happy Holidays!!

Well, today was my sons 18th birthday and while we were all out to dinner, we were discussing our upcoming Noordam cruise in March...and we began discussing the formal attire on formal nights. Guess what I found out.. that the reason my DS does not like formal night is because he feels rediculous wearing tan pants with a navy jacket, white shirt and tie! He wants to wear a regular suit...and better yet, he would LOVE to wear a tux!!

It looks like my men will be wearing tuxes this next sailing...and I'm sure my son will be keeping it on the entire night, too!

I certainly did enjoy hearing everyone's comments...Revneal, it too bad you won't be on our cruise because I would love to show off my son in his tux... Maybe I'll post some photos when we return!

Thanks again!

Congratulate your son for me ... he's graduated to adulthood! Your men will be very "smart" looking! Please make sure you post some photos of your lovely family, including your son. It does an "old fuddy" (haha) good to see young men picking up the standard!! :D
