Kids Collecting Sea Shells

Hi,

Taking my 2 children on "Imagination" (GC and O.R. Jamaica). 1st time to the ocean for them. They are looking forward to collecting shells. Does anybody have suggestions on which island / beach is best ? Thanks for the help.

I've never been able to find good shells at any of the beaches. There's only the little tiny ones or broken pieces of bigger shells. Many of the shops sell shells, but I know it's much more fun to find your own. Sorry this doesn't help.

I went to Stingray City in Grand Cayman, so I never got to Seven Mile Beach. However, the beach in Ocho Rios is pure powder. No shells. Here is a picture of the beach ...

Collecting seashells at the beach is my favorite memory of my parents & I from my childhood.

My daughters love collecting shells. On Grand Cayman, they collected pieces of coral off the beach right in town. There are some steps down to a small beach and they found nice pieces of coral. We have them in glass jars at our house. Just remember to bring extra bags or zip bags to store them in. I don't think it is against the law to do this. We have never been stopped or checked with them. I know there are rules about bringing back certain things from certain places, but I think what we did was okay!!

Ultimate shelling is on Sanibel Island, FL. If you ever get the chance, go! Sorry no help to you for the carib in this area.

Sorry it is against the "rules" to take coral from the sea..it's a living thing.

Actually, it's not leagal to bring any coral back into the US - if found could be a big fine & bad end to a great trip.

Check the shells to make sure there isn't a living thing inside. You don't want to move the little guy from his home, and it would not smell very nice after awhile.
