black sand beaches?

Two nice ones on the Hilo side of the Big Island are Punaluu and Kehena. Punaluu is about 45 minutes past Volcano.

Kehena is on Rt. 137 between Pohoiki and Kalapana...at about the 19 mile marker. There is a steep path down to this beautiful beach. Also, this beach is clothing optional...so be warned:D Swimming can be dangerous here...but the sand is great.

The most beautiful black sand beach we saw on our Hawaiian cruise was on Maui on our Road to Hana trip (almost to Hana) at Wainapanapa State Park. There was another less dramatic but stil beautiful black sand beach earlier on the Hana highway, but Wainapanapa is really outstanding with natural rock arches, lava tubes, blow hole....

I second the recommendation of Lambs 2. That experience alone is worth the drive to Hana.

My group did not want to leave once we got there. We were there at sunset and we had the beach to ourselves. It was a stormy ocean that gave us spectular waves that were slamming against the cliffs. The blow hole was in top form with waves of spray creating a gyser.
