Black Flys????

The last thing you should plan your travels around in alaska is bug season. Basically, if it's not freezing out, there are probably bugs of some kind or another, including mosquitos, no-see-ums, black sox, white sox, and horse flies (my personal non-favorite). However, unless you are going off into the back of beyond, you are unlikely to encounter much in the way of bugs. Exceptions are the high, wet areas of Denali such as Wonder Lake which is very buggy until late July. There is really no way to predict how bad the bugs will be in any given season. Pack some bug wipes and a headnet if you plan on kayaking or hiking a lot.
