Wi-Fi Question?

Does anybody know how the Wi-Fi (wireless internet access for computers) works on the ship. Is there anything needed [phone card]? A co-worker of mine is travelling on the Radiance of the Seas the same time I will be on the Carnival Liberty and were wondering if we could email back & forth. Is it even worth bringing a laptop?

I dont know about your ship but on the Adventure there were only a couple hot spots. One by the computer area and the conceirge lounge. You could do the dial up in the room.

On Radiance there are hot spots in the Deck 4 Centrum, Schooner Bar, Hollywood Odyssy, C&A Lounge, Library, Internet Cafe, Conference Center, and Conceirge Club. I have heard that you can also pick up WiFi signal if you have a stateroom close to the center of the ship but I had a aft cabin so couldn't try it.

The info below is from the RCL FAQ, for members, by members, post 41 on page 3. It pretty much explains everything, except that if you have a Mac, they provide no tech support. People have varying luck with Macs, according to the board. I take my laptop every time, my wife takes hers as well, so it's just up to you if you think it's worth it. It's not broadband, but it's not dial up either, it's reasonably quick, especially early in the morning or late at night. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your e-mail. As of December 18, 2005, all nineteen Royal 
Caribbean International ships have Wi-Fi access. The Mariner of the Seas 
actually had this since July 2005. There will be six designated "hot spots" 
onboard. You will will need to check onboard for the designated spots.
To use our RC WI-FI wireless internet access guests need:
- Their own laptop
- Windows operating system
- 802.11b Wireless networking capability
Guests who do not have a wireless ready laptop may obtain a wireless 
card at the Guest Relations desk.
Rental Fee of the card is as follows:
Card $10.00 per day or $50 per voyage - 7 nights and longer Damage 
Insurance $2.00 per day Lost/Damaged Card Fee $250.00
The cost for Internet access either by the Internet Workstation or the 
guest's own laptop for Wi-Fi is below:
Base rate is $.50 per minute or the guest may choose from one of our 
prepaid packages: $25.00 for 60 minutes $35.00 for 90 minutes $50.00 for 
150 minutes.
These prices are in addition to the rental of the card for those guests who 
do not have a wireless ready laptop.
All prices are subject to change without notice.

I´ve answered your WiFi question on the other thread you asked this question.

 

But to add on Radiance there is also the option of CyberCabin Hookup. This is a wired hook up and a dial up connection. It´s slow, but it´s a flat rate and if you plan to use it frequently might be more convenient as can be used from your room and you won´t pay per minute.

All the info in post #5 applies to Freedom except, it has wireless stem to stern, so you can get a Wi-Fi connection in your stateroom, and it does NOT have cyber cabin available. The pricing and equipment requirments are the same as the rest of the fleet.
