Summit - cabin help

I am very new to cruising and I am just establishing my way around these boards. We've been offered cabin 6039 (penthouse deck) on Summit for a cruise from Vancouver to San Diego. Is this cabin ok in your opinion? It seems quite near the front but we do have a balcony. How can I tell which side of the ship we are on as I do think you need to be on the landside for Alaska. I am so sorry if this is a basic question!

If this is a terrible cabin, I think we might postpone until May of 2008.

Maybe you might want to see if 6030 or 6035 is available as these have very large (2-3x) verandas and have no neighbors on one side. We had 6030 on the last Alaska cruise and it was great. Here is a list of cabins with extra large verandas:

2A-8161,8146,9173,9138

2B-7049,7080,7163,7166,7171,7173,7175,7177,7174,7176, 7178,7180

2C-6016,6018,6020,6021,6022,6023,6024,6025,6026,6027, 6029,6030,

6031,6033,6035,6053,6048

2A: 8160,8146,9173,9138

2B: 7049,7080,7163,7166,7171,7173,7175,7177,7174,

7176,7178,7180

2C:6016,6018,6020,6021,6022,6023,6024,6025,

6026,6027,6029,6030,6031,6033,6034

CC: 9043,9038,9201,9164,9162,9160,

6135,6136,6143,6144,7023,7212,7208,7206

Good luck!

I agree with the post above about larger balconies, but if those are not an option, then I can speak to 6039. We had 6032 which is one cabin back from the larger balconies w/ larger dividers. Our view to the left was somewhat blocked. We would rather have been next door which is the starboard/port equivalent of 6039. We very much liked being front of the elevators on the Penthouse deck. The foot traffic is much reduced b/c there's a dead end so it was very quiet. We never heard a peep from the theater below so noise from that was not an issue. It is considerably farther from the DR, but we needed the exercise to counter all the calories we were consuming. B/c the Penthouse deck is kind of in the middle, we usually took the stairs instead of the elevators whenever we went anywhere.

I guess I'm not exactly sure how a Vancouver to San Diego cruise is going to AK. You'll be on the better side for a southbound ship. As far as viewing in AK, we found our balcony to be of little use. There are forward decks where the view is much better, and that's where many pax went rather than their own balcony. We liked having the balcony b/c it provided floor to ceiling view when in the cabin, but we actually didn't go out on the balcony all that much. There are lots of great places on the ship for viewing; our balcony was not our first choice.

If you can't move forward two cabins or more (one is worse!), I'd say go with 6039. If we're ever on an M-class ship again, we're going right back to the front of the Penthouse deck.

We did this cruise last year in 6134 which is on the opposite side of the ship from 6039. Because you go north and then south on the inside passage it would seem that you get the same kind of views from either side. AT the hubbard glacier we spent lots of time with the captain turning the ship all the way around so we got great views from our balcony. It was so warm on the way south from Seattle to Catalina that we got nicely sunburned on our balcony. (when we returned home everyone thought it was a windburn from cold Alaska!) It was a great itinerary - you'll have a great time.

Hi All:

Curious if you would pick one of the 'Sweet 16' cabins on the Penthouse level (6016 - 6035) over the 71773/74/75/76/77/78/79/80 cabins on the Vista level. I have the opportunity to get one in either section, and am leaning towards the Penthouse level because the balconies are so much larger.

Thanks!

Wheat--we just got off the Summit and has Cabin #6035. the balcony was fantastic! When we boarded we asked the cabin steward to bring us two lounge chairs (already had to regular chairs and a small table). They were in place by the time we got back from the lifeboat drill. The next day she brought 2 pads to put on the loungers. We just loved that balcony and would take one of those "sweet 16" rooms again in a heartbeat. Also, the statement about that end of the ship being quiet is absolutely correct. Since ours was a hoiday cruise, there were about 500 kids on board but we were never bothered by them where we were.
