Belize with 6 and 8 year olds...Zoo?

We are stopping in Belize on our Carnival Glory cruise week after next. We are cruising for the first time with our 2 girls, 6 and 8 y.o.'s. I was thinking about trying to go to the Belize zoo, but the ship excursion also includes a city tour with a total time of 5 hours, with only 1.5 hours at the zoo. Anyone been to the zoo either on their own or with a tour? Should you plan to spend more time than 1.5 hours there? Would it be expensive to catch a taxi to the zoo? Anyone know the cost of entrance fees at the zoo? Any ideas on what to do/where to go in Belize that the children would enjoy? We are planning beach days and snorkeling at the other ports of call, so I was trying to vary the experiences. Thanks for your help!
