How far in advance...

We booked about a month before in December. BUT once we found out our ship was not changing to island time, we were able to change from their snorkeling trip to the Rays Reef and Rum Point right there on the pier. Eldon and Sharon were both there and they had room to move the 5 of us to the other tour - no problem.

 

I'd book as soon as possible. You can always cancel with no charge up to 72 hours before the tour (if I remember correctly that's the amount of time.)
