Car /Jeep rental?

How is the best way to get around, see and do as much as possible? We dock at 12:00Noon and sail at 11:00PM. We'd like to see some of the island, do some snorkeling and maybe a little shopping. Should we rent a car/jeep for the day or just go with the public bus system? Any ideas?

When we rented they gave us a map and pretty much told us how to get around. The island is way smaller then I thought.

We plan on renting a 4X4 when we get there.
