Yes, Ren initially did without TA's. Later they changed this policy. The actual demise of the line was 9/11.

That in cobination with trying to expand to fast and too small. The 8 R class ships ordered at one time could not produce the revenue needed to support the line. One thing that was learned from this is the cruise industry would have a hard time justifying and new small builds at mass market rates.

Now buying someone elses small ships solves that problem. That's why Oceana and Princess have done so well with the R class ships, they didn't have to pay anywhere near what Renaisance did for those ships. They have been very good to their owners. I expect X to have the same luck with their new ships.

Ren was in trouble WAY before 9/11. Even they admitted that, finally.

They were really a study in how NOT to run a business.

First - dont allow any kids, which in many cases excludes their parents

Second - dont allow smokers, which in many cases excludes spouses and groups

Third - alienate the people who can fill your ships (TA'S), even under the previous condition.

Finally - go from nowhere to 8 ships in a minute and a half. Pretty sure most lines took decades to build 8 ships.

Pretty much a recipe for disaster, but dont kid yourself it was 9/11 that did it. They file BK on 9/25/01. It takes months to draw up the papers.

We, there are eith 6 or 8 of us, cruise 2 times a year for 18 yrs now and none of us are smokers. We all noticed that recently smokers seem to ignore the rules more than ever. They smoked where ever they wanted, in the halls, in guest relations lines, in the stores... cigarettes and cigars. It was actually cloudy outside the casino and the photographer had to move one night. If they don't want to, or as the crew says "can't" say anything about the smoking, why can't they simply increase the air exchange? It usually gets warm in the casino at night and a bit of fresh air would help in several ways. We were on RCCL recently and they had 2 nights designated as 'non-smoking' in the casino. I can tell you it was just as crowded those nights, we were even surprised.

Two things I always keep in mind is that I feel sorry for the crew working the casino (or some bars) that really need the job & money and are constantly exposed to the cloud AND also second hand smoke is one of the most popular triggers for migraine headaches. Two of our group usually end up turning in early with a migraine at least a couple times a cruise. Thats just some consideration not always thought of.

Plain and simple, I just can't understand in this day and age, with all the information available to us why anyone with an ounce of intelligence is STILL smoking. That said, it's sad, but they are. Now if they can only be polite about it and I know everyone says that they are so thoughtful and considerate when they smoke but if this were the case, would it be such a 'hot' topic ( Pun intended)? I think not. There are more people in this country that don't smoke than do...I think we should very vocally start letting businesses know how we feel. I can understand the addiction I can't understand the rudeness of a large percentage of smokers. I know it's legal but it's nasty and sometimes makes a very expensive vacation 'stink' literally.

I think it should be banned entirely from all public areas. The reason I feel it has not been is the very influential Tobacco Lobby.... Money, money, money.

Ignorance is bliss. Heroin addicts know the risk they take every time they do a hit and can't stop either, but I don't judge them.

However, I agree with the problem of rudeness from some smokers.
