Normally you do make a deposit to hold your spot. In Grand Cayman a reputable operator will refund your deposit if the ship is unable to make the stop there. The same should apply in Cozumel. Be sure to check with your selected dive operator as they can have different cancelation policies.

A few years ago my wife got sick in the middle of the cruise and I was able to get on the internet on the ship and email our cancellation 48+ hours in advance so we got our money back. Always be sure to carry phone and email for all private dive operators you choose.

 

We usually prefer to pick our own dive shop instead of the "cattle boats" that the cruise lines use. However, when on tight or odd schedules, we use the cruise line excursion.
