Palermo - what to do?

Our last stop is Palermo, none of the ship tours look very interesting...can one just walk off the ship and wander around or is the port too far from the main part of town? :confused: I would rather not spend too much as we are spending quite a bit on a private driver in Naples. Any ideas would be appriciated!
