I'm sure you are going to be as hooked on cruising as we are.:D We have been on The Fantasy a couple of times and are going again in May.

We live in Bossier City... we go down to NO about 4 or 5 times a year. Love it there. Or at least love Laffite's .. I always tell my husband just leave me there and come back later to pick me up.

I live in Dallas & am down your way too many times a year & NO 3 or times. Couldn't agree more. Those that are scared to cruise out of New Orleans, just don't know what they are missing.

I didn't realize people were scared to cruise out of New Orleans! I know a lot of people I have talked to were surprised, because they didn't know the cruise ships were back there, thought they were still diverted to Galveston or where ever they went.

I am SO excited to go to New Orleans for the first time! Not only to see the city that I've heard so much about, but also to bring some tourism to the city. I know we are only 2 people - but I'm hoping that our visit and our money will go towards helping to rebuild some of the tourism economy.

That being said, we chose to cruise the Fantasy because we got a PHENOMENAL deal on the room! We're not THAT noble, but I am still just as excited to go to New Orleans, and would much rather spend money there than in Miami....

Hey! We are docked in Progreso and my husbands skycard is actually working so I have some internet access. Just wanted to tell everyone we are having a AWESOME time! I knew coming in this wasn't going to be like the Disney Cruise we went on 2 years ago but with that being said, who cares if it's older! Honestly! We are booked in a Cat 12 (U107) and the room, while it may show signs of aging is huge, even compared to the balcony room we had on the Disney. The king bed is so comfortable and my daughter took the fold out sofa which she says is way comfortable and my son took the sleepaway and has been sleeping like a rock. They are having such a great time with the activities for their age. I guess there are more kids then usual because it is Easter week but they both made friends and have there days booked already, which means Mom (me) can chill on the Lido Deck and catch some sun and relax (already on book #3). Yesterday, my hubby and son went deep sea fishing and my son caught a 3 foot barracuda so needless to say he was in his glory. He also had fun haggling with the locals and got himself a "$38" shark tooth necklace for 12 bucks, lol.

I will say that I can't comment on everything since I'm pretty easy going and just hear for relaxation but I find the food to be good (wouldn't say awesome but nothing I could complain about). Tonight is the first night I'm going to see a show, some comedy thing which sounds good so again, I have yet to see any shows. Played some trivia on the Lido deck and did a dancing competition thing with my daughter but other then that, for me it's all about just having no stress, no laundry, no cleaning and just peace and it has been fabulous!

The Weather with the exception of yesterday in Cozumel could not be more perfect if I ordered it. Yesterday it was pretty much cloudy the whole day and a few showers. Last night the seas were ROUGH, I literally couldn't open the balcony door without pushing cause the wind was blowing like crazy. I heard this morning they had the upper decks closed off. This was not a problem for us though cause it was great sleeping with the rocking back and forth even though a few times thought I might fall off the bed, lol.

Hope everyone has a wonderful time and leaving from New Orleans was a breeze and first time being in the city it was pretty cool. Ate at a place called Mothers that I guess has been around forever and had some good food. If you have any questions I'll check the thread when I get back. Bon Voyage

Yes, many people on CC have expressed their fear of NOLA with the high crime rrae but that happens in any big City. I love it there & visit ever chance I get. Can't wait to be there again in about 6 weeks. :D

Can anyone tell me if this boat/ship has the chocolate buffet I keep reading about? If so when is it??

Oh reelaxation, I am so jealous. It sounds like you are having a blast!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't remember seeing it on the 4 day cruise last Oct but I'll be on the 5 day in May & will see if they do it then. I can't remember if they had it on the 5 day in Jan 2007.

We saw it on the 4 day in January. It was very small, though, and didn't have the shakes and some of the other things I've seen before. Likewise, the 5 day Fantasy cruises have the chocolate buffet, but it's smaller scale than, say, the one on the Conquest.

since this will be your first time in New Orleans. just a little bit of advise. if anyone tries to stop you just keep walking.. if some says they are giving you a ticket just keep walking (unless they are a cop and have a gun) someone stops you and says i bet you $20 i know where you got your shoes tell them the same place you got yours on the street keep walking. Don't want to make you afraid or anything because New Orleans is one of the, if not the, best city in the states. the beauty of the city is so wonderful. but you have bad people in any city and i would prefer to be prepared than not to. But do take the walk down to Laffite's get a hurrican they have the best IMO they are by far the best. ENJOY:D

Thank you for the advice : ) Fortunately, I am a pretty experienced traveler - not always in the most "desirable" places. I've also spent a good amount of time working in the inner city.... I think I've learned to exercise pretty good judgment - and hopefully will recognize that while it may be cheaper to walk, it's SAFER to take a cab!

I also have a good friend of the family who lives in NO - he won't be there that weekend, but is sending a few of his friends to "escort" my friend and I out and about.... apparently he was also slightly concerned about two single girls out and about in New Orleans : )

Thank you again for the preparation. We will definitely be careful and be sure to use good judgment... we'll try a hurricane (or two...!) but have already decided it would probably be in our best interest to save the real partying for the ship!

Are you guys going out Friday night (April 18) before your cruise? My sister in law will be in town, I'm sure we'll take her to the Quarter Friday night. We always go to drag queen bingo at Oz on Fridays - we usually have so much fun we just stay there, but sometimes we wander Bourbon Street. She's never been to Oz, though, so it's a must when she comes down for this cruise.

Thank you again! I appreciate your honesty about what to expect. I'm a social worker in real life : ) and am really interested in the effects of Katrina on the city, especially re: the increase in crime and long term effects on survivors. I have read about post-Katrina bus tours that donate the money to those who are still struggling since the hurricane. Do you know anything about these?

Of course, I also want to see all the great things the city has to offer - plan to walk around the French Quarter a LOT... also REALLY excited to go to the Jazz Festival that weekend. I'm sure the city will be full of interesting people.

We are staying at the Drury Inn - which I guess is an OK walk during the day to the French Quarter, but have been advised to take a cab at night - which is fine with us.

Any more must see or do that you can recommend?

my husband and i dont normally eat at the same place more than once but

Napoleon House on Chartres is wonderful. Johnny's Poboy on St Louis is great for breakfast and lunch. And of course my fav of all favs is Laffite's on Bourbon. i little aways from the main part of Bourbon but well worth the walk. Oldest bar in the counrty lit by candle light. it is great.
