Can you cash traveller's checks on the ship? Is there a limit? Is it a hassle? Can you use them in the ports? We are sailing on the Conquest next weekend and I think my Mother has already purchased them. Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can cash them at the purser's desk, and I believe in the casino.

If you look at the Welcome Aboard booklet you rec'd with your docs, there is something in there about cashing t.c., advising that the ship carries only a certain amount of cash, so it's better to cash your t.c. fairly early in the cruise.

You can use travellers checks in ports in the Caribbean. The shops treat them like cash as far as bargaining power goes (usually better than credit cards). It tends to be more time consuming to use travellers checks in the ports than it is in the U.S. They seem to be more careful about checking the signatures and ask for id. Could be they've been ripped off a lot.

 

I've never had a problem cashing travellers checks at any time during the cruise. But, I've never needed to cash more than $200 at a time.

The majority of my funds when traveling are in the form of travelers checks... We cashed many on the ship... be careful though, if you are going to Mexico, there are many shops that will not accept them if your purchase is under a certain amount, many would use that excuse to sell you more...just make sure you have some cash too...

I always bring Travelers Checks on the Cruises. However, make sure you bring some cash along too especially in Mexico. It is very safe and no problem. They are treated as "Cash"....Ike

We have never had a problem getting our travelers checks cashed on the ship at the desk or in the casino. We have used them in ports as well but keep the denominations close to the purchase price. One new thing that American Express has come out with is a travel card. It works just like travelers checks except it looks like a credit card. You had money to it beforehand to use. It isn't a credit card per say but can be used just like one. Has all the advantages that travelers checks do as well. You can find out more on the American Express website.

Should we bring traveler's checks or should we bring cash? We are going on the Triumph to San Juan, St. Thomas and St. Maarten-I was wondering if we can use traveler's checks on those islands or if cash is better.
