travel time to Uxmal?

My sister and I are cruising to Progreso next week on the Norwegian Dream -her first cruise, my 3rd. She's hesitant about non-cruiseline excursions, but we'd both love to see Uxmal, and Norwegian doesn't offer an excursion there. How long is the drive if we rent a taxi? Is there any option besides a taxi? We have to be back to the ship by 4 PM. Would we be better off sticking with Dzibilchaltun, since those ruins appear to be so much closer? I want to plan ahead to make her first cruise terrific!

Uxmal is about an hour and a half to two hours. Good roads and not crowded. You can rent a car in Progreso. There is a useful map in this visitor's guide. http://www.yucatantoday.com Maybe the best visitor's guide I've seen for any destination. To me, after visiting Uxmal and Chichen Itza, Uxmal is prettier and more impressive. Also less crowded. There may be vendors for tours at Progreso. I vacation in Merida about once a year.

Me and my husband were in Progresso last week (March 7) and we took the ship's excursion to Uxmal. We originally were going to rent a car but chickened out. We were glad that we did the excursion. It was nice to just ride in the bus and look at the world around us. The bus was very nice and our guides were awesome! Uxmal was wonderful and beautiful! It totally exceeded our expectations! Also while we were there there were about 8 members of President Bush's security team getting ready for his visit to the ruins today (Wednesday the 14th).

Go to Uxmal! You won't regret it!!!

I was glad to read about your decision to take the shore excursion to Uxmal. I wanted to rent a car but the women in our group want to ride the bus. The $1,000 deposit on the rental car deterred my DW.
