Sue L Posted March 12, 2007 #1 Share Posted March 12, 2007 I have been searching constantly for flights from NYC to Vancouver to catch our cruise to Alaska, the cheapest flights keep coming up on Cathay Pacific airlines which seems to be based in the Orient. Has anyone heard of them? know their reputation? All the other flights on US carriers are ridiculous in the 700$ range per person. The cruise air is cheaper! I don't know what to do because I do prefer to pick and book my own flights and go in the day before. If anyone has any feedback on Cathay Pacific I would really appreciate it.
tortugas Posted March 12, 2007 #2 Share Posted March 12, 2007 Have you looked into flying into Seattle and then getting to Vancouver from there?? I think I looked into this when we went to Alaska last year, but we ended up doing a roundtrip out of Seattle. Please let us know what you find, as I'd like to sail out of Vancouver at some point as well. Hopefully others who know more will chime in. Good luck! Cassandra Posted March 12, 2007 #3 Share Posted March 12, 2007 I know they fly out of NY/NJ all the time. Well known airline, but check the FAA's website, you could probably get more info. I'm not surprised on the price. It's going up all over on the airlines. Takes lots of $$$ to fill those huge engines with gas. :) You could ask the cruise line if you do want to book your air through them if they could get you in the day before. Someone posted on another board about this & gave the cruiseline a flim-flam excuse as to why they had to fly in the day before & apparently got it. (shrugs). Your call. Wilde_37 Posted March 12, 2007 #4 Share Posted March 12, 2007 Cathay Pacific is probably the best airline in Asia. It has a very high standard of service. I would have no hesitation in flying with them. They are part of the One World Alliance, so they would be partners with the likes of American Airlines, British Airways, Aer Lingus. I would fly with them anyday!
Maxima81 Posted March 12, 2007 #5 Share Posted March 12, 2007 You might also try Harmony Airways. Last year, I was able to get a 2-for-1 special (paid about $600 total for 2 people) roundtrip between JFK and Vancouver over Labor Day Weekend. I think the flights are seasonal (summer months) and that offer was part of a promotion since it was the first time they did it. No worries about Cathay Pacific. They are a very good and reputable airline operating mainly out of Hong Kong to all parts of Asia (and North America of course). I recenlty took a 16 hour flight direct from JFK to Hong Kong. Prompt and courteous service, good food, entertainment options (personal TV screens on all seats if you're flying the jumbo jet). I flew coach and the seats were typical, not extremely roomy, but certainly not overly cramped unless you picked a row where you couldn't recline because of a divider behind you. If I recall, Vancouver should be the stopover before ending in Hong Kong. Just to give you an idea and for whatever it's worth, I believe they were rated as one of the best airlines according to Conde Nast Traveler magazine.... leoandhugh Posted March 12, 2007 #6 Share Posted March 12, 2007 Cathay Pacific is the airline of what used to be Hong Kong when it was a British possession, and had a great reputation as one of the best carriers in the Pacific - right up there with Singapore and Thailand. Now that Hong Kong is part of China proper, so is the airline although it is still managed out of Hong Kong and still maintains a good reputation for service.:) :)
Sue L Posted March 12, 2007 Author #7 Share Posted March 12, 2007 Wow, thanks for all the great and quick replies, I was nervous because they are 200$ cheaper per person than the US carriers.

Take the money and spend it on board - relax about the airline (they are great) and regardless of anything else - it is just getting you to your cruise - which is the main event. Sally Forth Posted March 12, 2007 #9 Share Posted March 12, 2007 Cathay Pacific is absolutely top-notch. Think KLM or British Airways quality. This is a really bad year for airfare to the West Coast. I do the trip once every two months, and nothing is going on sale. We haven't paid over $500 Cdn (before taxes) Toronto-Vancouver since 2002 and I just paid $560 for a May flight.
