Smoking on cruiseships

Interesting that you note that---I live in Washington State, where smoking in all public places was banned a couple of years ago. Tavern owners, restaurants, etc fought hard to keep that from going in because they thought they would lose business. As an adamant clean air person, I even felt sorry for the tavern owners. However, the end results have not been drastic for anyone, even the small taverns that border other states have continued to do well, and many high end bars have seen an increase in profit because non-smokers now go there.

Cruise ships are worried possibly because the Carnival Paradise, smoke free, while always sailing full had less profit from booze and casino (make your own conclusions, I'm not going there). Personally I would prefer to allow smoking so those who do smoke can enjoy a nice vacation, BUT, with more restrictions. There is no such thing as a "half smoking room". It's all or nothing. So why not have a few designated smoking areas, fully enclosed and/or at aft outside and make other public rooms and cabins and balconies non-smoking? Maybe a full out smoking bar with entertainment, again fully enclosed. If smokers want to go to other rooms, and have an extreme addiction, they can wear nicotine patches. And non-smokers who choose to go to the smoking bar would then have no right to complain.

Ultimately this won't change until non-smokers start letting cruise ship companies know that they demand clean air, so don't hesitate to write to them, put it on your comment cards, and be prepared to drink up  so their profits don't flag.

I will be the first one to say that smoking on an inside room is not a good idea. I do smoke and always book a non smoking room with a baclonat hotels on land. This way who ever I am traveling with is comfortable and I still have the option of going outside. My friends call me the considerate smoker:)

Maybe cruise ships can book non smokers on inside cabins? And there a lot of hotels now who have air fresh which helps....

Someone said that smoking (not sure of the exact quote) is the new cause to jump on right now. Heck the new cause is trans fat so lets get everyone going on that now too and leave the smoking issue as it is so "yesterday...":D

It's not unusual at all the enter a hotel room that wreaks of perfume and the smell of that takes longer to fade than a cigarette. The worst place is in a restaurant or in the ships dining rooms where just about every woman has a different perfume on and they all seem to work on the basis that they'll wear as much as possible of the heaviest perfume they can get their hands on so as theirs is noticed... There's nothing worse than chewing on perfume when your trying to eat.

While it may not be worse, it is just as bad trying to enjoy a meal when the folks you are dining with are smokers. While they may not be smoking at the table, the odor of stale smoke eminating from their clothes, hair, and skin compare equally to "chewing on perfume when you are trying to eat". While I have no scientific evidence, I would disagree with your assessment about how it takes longer for a room "polluted" by perfume to air out than one that has been smoked in.

The main reason non smokers pick on us smokers is we are the only ones in their reach. Do any of them complain about car emissions, those ungodly fumes from trucks. Do they complain of the cars, busses, and cabs outside the terminal waiting for their passengers while emitting obnoxious fumes? Have they ever looked at or smelled the huge plumes of sooty smoke coming from the stacks of their cruise ship?

So you're saying that smokers emit obnoxious ungoldy fumes?

Sorry, but you paint a bullseye on your back and wave a red cape...... I couldn't resist.

I cannot change people who drink or wear perfume. You cannot change people who smoke. Why can't you just accept this. We all have faults. Realize that smoking is an addiction and most of us would love to give it up. If people were more considerate to others, the world would be a greater place to live in. For any of us to complain anymore realize that you will not change the other person. Only they can change themself.

I sailed on the Carnival Paradise when it was a non-smoking ship and it was nice. Although I don't think smokers should be banned from smoking anywhere, it was good to be able to choose a non-smoking environment if we wanted to. I am sad to hear that they are no longer keeping that one ship as a non-smoking area. :(

Without starting a whole other debate on smoking etc.

I enjoy a cigar on the balcony and even if I were a cigarette smoker I would never be that inconsiderate to smoke inside the cabin.

I am considerate of others, clean up my mess, don't throw ashes or butts over the side of the ship .

Same here.

I could not resist the urge to respond to this since I detest cigarette/cigar smoking. I do think they should have a designated area for those that want to smoke... the cigar bar for one, and then one side of the ship - that way people can avoid those areas that find it disgusting. I think it is unfair that people smoke in their rooms (the next guests may not like the smell of it), you may fall asleep or pass out drunk and start a fire, and I think its unfair for people to smoke on their balconies...if I am next door to your balcony and you are smoking - I am gonna smell it, which is why I always carry my squirt bottle of vinegar and spray you across the balcony wall so you can smell the stink and get it on your clothes as well.:D . Also, people who smoke with children in their homes or cars or make them sit in a place for smokers are child abusers. Why should you be allowed to give a small child cancer? You have already decided you want it - but your small child might not. By the way - I do appreciate you smokers that are nice enough to realize that not everyone wants to smell like smoke and be exposed to it.

ROFLMAO... hope you are ready for the next day when I start tossing logs over the wall:eek::eek:

Anything wrong with having a polite conversation?

Someone asked me about calling Princess and what they said about requesting a non-smoking room. She said that first of all they assume that people have enough common sense to not smoke in rooms without any ventilation, but that sometimes people smoke anyways. I told her the person I'm traveling with is allergic to smoke and she said that if the room has been smoked in by the people before us they will either 1. clean the room to rid it of the smoke smell or 2. put us in a new room that hasnt been smoked in. She also noted it on our booking that we will not tolerate a room that has been smoked in. We've never had a problem with this in the past, but I want to make sure that we don't this time. She said that they keep track of the rooms that are smoked in. People that smoke have to request an ash tray and then it is noted that they have smoked in the room. Hope this helps! :)

Some rooms don't have ventilation???? Hmmmmmm....you better rethink that one!!:D

While I agree with most of the posters who object to smoking in the room, your post reminds me of the driver who gets pissed because someone cut in front of them and responds by doing something that causes 2 or 3 cars to get scattered across the interstate and puts several people in the hospital. Responding to a smoking issue with assault (albeit a minor assault) IMHO is a really bad choice that can easily lead to escalation.

I don't want to change anyone:)

Smoking is a health issue to people who don't smoke at all due to second hand smoke.

How do you keep the smoke on the smoking side of the ship?

It is also a safety issue on a ship.

The number of smokers is declining every year.

You will see non-smoking ships at some point.

And it will be a business desicion, nothing more.

You will always have the right to smoke, just keep it to yourself in your own home or car.

Having been forced off our balcony on 2nd leg of 37 days Golden Princess New Orleans to Beunos Aries by 2 totally inconsiderate yet apparently highly inteligent North Americans in the next stateroom who smoked pipes and cigars non stop on their balcony and the fumes were apparent 4 cabins down as well
The premise that smoking on your balcony is not anti social needs a serious rethink.

Eventually Princess moved us to another balcony cabin but having booked a specific midships stateroom for 2 cruises B2B over a year previously i see no reason why we should have been forced to move

I also object to the constant reference that more Europeans smoke
The Spanish,Portuguese South Americans and Asians may indeed be heavy smokers but England these days is much like the USA and smoking is banned in all restuarants pubs etc

Princess have spent a small fortune on balcony sprinklers and furniture solely as a result of the Star fire

How much simpler to have shown consideration for all by adopting Oceania policies not only would it provide a pleasant atmosphere for all it would dramatically cut down the damage to stateroom furnishings and the health of cabin stewards forced to clean up smokers rooms
I Hate Being Near Someone Who Drinks. I Just Don't Like Drinking Or Smelling It. Does That Mean Cruise Lines Will Stop Selling It Or People Will Stop Smuggling It On Board. Can't You Have A Good Time Without Being Intoxicated. To Me Drunks Are Loud And Stupid. But, The World Is Not Going To Change For Me. I Just Keep Away From The Lounges. I Have To Accept This. Smoking Is Dangerous To Me, But Drunks Can Be Dangerous To Anyone. I'll Never Understand Why People Need To Drink Unless They Are Addicted; As I Am To Nicotine. I Say Stop Drinking. Anyone With Me, I Bet Not. Thank You.
Might suprise you to get any support whatsoever but I'm with you all the way. I can't abide having drunks (or even those only merry) around me. I certainly don't need alcohol to have a good time and it makes me laugh how people want to save a few pennies by smuggling booze on-board.

By not allowing booze you wouldn't have people getting drunk and then those drunks wouldn't fall asleep in their rooms with a lit cigarette which is the fear raised by some on here. Reduce the possibility and do away with booze. Drink is not only very very dangerous but it makes many people loud, obnoxious and aggressive.

Ok, so I'll get slated for the support and I'm in the vast minority but each to their own. If you can booze, I can smoke.

Just Curious...

Do non-smokers only "hang out" with non-smokers? I sometimes get the idea that many non-smokers judge who they will associate with by whether the other person smokes or not. I never smoke around people that I personally know who cannot tolerate cigarette smoke, would never smoke in someone's home, would not smoke on a tour if others did not, etc.

I believe smokers are more considerate than non-smokers believe they are. We don't smoke inside buildings unless we have express permission to do so, we usually smoke outside away from people who would think it offensive, many of us do not smoke in our own homes or automobiles so that we won't be in confined spaces when we do smoke.

I'm sorry that many of you have had to endure disrespectful smokers, but in the grand scheme of things, all of us have had to endure those individuals who show little respect for others whether smoking is involved or not.

I wouldn't be opposed to smoking and non-smoking rooms, being restricted to certain times when I could smoke on my balcony (within reason), having certain bars on the ship smoke free. But, until the cruise lines make those decisions and I then have the decision to sail with them or not I will abide by the "designated" smoking area on a ship. Non-smokers also have choices within the current "RULES" on a ship and can choose to sail or not to sail knowing full well that smoking is allowed.

If I'm on my balcony smoking just ask me nicely to refrain when you are using yours and I will stop. Coughing or weezing on the other side of the wall is "not asking nicely" it's immature. Let's try and be sensible adults here, not act like children.
Balconies would provide much needed ventilation and escape paths for the smoke.
I would suggest balcony cabins assigned to smokers (smoking allowed only on balconies) and inside cabins for non-smokers....
Argghh! Please don't tell me I have to take up smoking to get a balcony cabin!
