JotWorld Posted March 23, 2007 #102 Share Posted March 23, 2007 We have finally arrived in Arica, Chile. The weather this morning is comfortable with fog. The hills look dry, very similar to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The temperature at noon should be about 74F or 23C, sky will be mostly sunny, and the humidity will be 59%. Tonight we set our clocks back an hour so we will be on Eastern Standard time tommorrow. Vicky and I are going to do Arica on our own. We plan on visiting the steel church that Mr. Eifel designed, climb a hill to see the "Christ Redeemer Statue" very similar to the ones' in Rio and Lisbon. That's if we are really ambitious. Also, we will do some shopping for souvieners. Happy Cruising and we hope this makes your day a little brighter. Easykruz, Bill and Vicky:) Have A Great Day One & All!:) Jot Bill:D (In the Beautiful Mountains of NC)

Easykruz, Bill and Vicky[/quote] Vicky and I were not ambitious enough today in Arica to climb the mountain because the statue on top of the hill is not like the ones' in Lisbon and Rio. At least that's our excuse for not climbing the mountain:D . There was a great town festival in Arica today with marching bands from different schools in the area because today is the day the Presidenta visits Arica. What a great festival, the Chilean people are very nice and wanted even to take our picture. Yes, I did say Presidenta, (a woman President) and all the Chilean people love her. Enough for politics. We noticed that the church designed and built by Eifel needs some paint otherwise it will rust away. The rest of Arica is beautiful. There was even an art exhibit that had some works of Monet, Degas, and Remoir, unbelieveable! I love Chile.:) Everyone needs to come and see for themselves, this trip has been awesome so far. Some other Cruise Critic Cruisers went on a tour to see Chamoro (sp) Lake. I'm waiting for there review. Four hour bus ride there and four hour bus ride back at a final altitude of 15,000 ft. Hopefully, I can talk them into posting tonight or tommorrow about their trip. Easykruz, Bill

Julia’s Journey’s Posted March 24, 2007 #112 Share Posted March 24, 2007 Good evening from the Golden where we will turn our clock's back tonight and be even with you folks on the east coast. I sure love that extra hour of sleep. DH and I walked around town today; nothing special. Found a craft market with the same merchandise as the other Chilean ports and a farmacia that had what we were looking for at a price way below USA. Weather was actually HOTwith high humidity. Shorts weather. Our seas remain calm - hope it continues all the way. The show tonight was advertised as a prop comedian. We went and it turned out to be a nutty juggler. There were quite a few laughs, ours included, but not something I would attend a second time. Tonight is also 70's night and the staff is dressed in sequins and multicolor wigs. Did they really dress that way in the 70's? The most popular place on the ship is the internet which will most likely change when the new rates go into effect. There is lots and lots of grumbling going on. Going to check out the casino since we haven't been in there yet. Sami Why is the internet cafe so busy, is the entertainment onboard just not entertaining?? Hope you have great fun in the casino:)
easykruz Posted March 24, 2007 #113 Share Posted March 24, 2007 Good Morning, Today the seas are calm (no white caps), it is cloudy but later on the sun should come out. Since we set the clocks back an hour a number of people are already up, I have never seen this many people in the internet cafe this early. Arlene and Milt said to say hello to everyone. I haven't seen Tony around since last cruise, I know he is here somewhere. On a big ship you don't always see everyone unless you intentionally meet somewhere. 2600 passengers, many venues and restaurants, easy to miss everyone. My tablemates last night told me that the art work by the Masters', (that we saw and I spoke about in a previous post) were copies. I thought they were the originals since the Presidenta came to Arica yesterday. Today is the lecture on Machu Picchu by Joe May. So Vicky and I will be going to listen to the lecture. Signing off for now. Tommorrow Machu Picchu. Easykruz, Bill:)

Sea Fan Posted March 25, 2007 #121 Share Posted March 25, 2007 Bill, Thanks for posting the picture I'm anxious to hear what they thought of Machu Picchu it's such a amazing place. Some people really have problems with the altitude I believe it's around 11,000 feet. I hope they take lots of pictures and post some here. LuAnn Posted March 25, 2007 #122 Share Posted March 25, 2007 Heard about it from my roll call thread for our trip "round the horn" starting 3/30/08..I have been in contact with some penguin experts (found them via google) who say that early April may be too late to see many, if any, penguins..I realize you all were in the area earlier than that but wondering if you heard from any rangers/tour guides etc. about "timing" My expert says that the chicks "fledge" in Jan-March (I believe that means "hatch")and then begin their moult process. He said by early April most have returned to sea..any input regarding information you received would be very appreciated!! Really want to see penguins! so wondering if I should try and move my cruise date up? Thank you! LuAnn

charlsee Posted March 25, 2007 #124 Share Posted March 25, 2007 I've been to Machu Picchu from a land tour that stated out from Cuzco. Cuzco is 11,000 feet, and all in my family had a hard time with the altitude. MP is at only about 8,000 feet, and we had no trouble, perhaps because we had been in Cuzco and had somewhat acclimatized. MP is a truly special place and I'd love to go back there some day. Sea Fan Posted March 25, 2007 #125 Share Posted March 25, 2007 Gosh, it was 35 years ago when I was there, I can remember being so sleepy in Cuzco they said it was the altitude. I had been in Peru and for a few weeks. Going from sea level to Machu Picchu in a few hours must be some trip! Bring on the oxygen!! Charlsee~Thanks for straightening out my fuzzy memory I was thinking it was MP that was at 11,000 feet. Dianne
