daflabear Posted March 19, 2007 #2 Share Posted March 19, 2007 It is an excellent venue. It's in a courtyard with tables for dining and also has a nice bar in the middle of it. The food is outstanding and they even have high quality pizza! It's about a $5 US cab fare. I think Armand Assante the actor is part owner. It is definately worth a visit. The bars/restaurants at the pier are not worth your time. It's across from the Radisson resort. Say hello to Patricia the barmaid in the Courtyard bar, she is great. I'll be there next Tuesday off the Explorer. Do not let other posters deter you from going about in Belize City. The natives are agressive in selling their wares but are harmless. I also enjoy gambling at the Princess resort. I only dropped $20 and played the quarter slots for nearly 2 hours.

OttoCal Posted March 21, 2007 #4 Share Posted March 21, 2007 Smoky Mermaid is great for either lunch or dinner. Don't miss it! You don't need a cab, it is a short walk about 5 blocks maybe? If you hit the Raddison you have gone too far. It is also on the safer side of the city/swing bridge. I agree with skipping the little tourist area set up when you first arrive, but there is a nice small store that is another block or two beyond the Smoky Mermaid (facing a small park) that had crafts from around the country that was more what Americans are used to- browse, touch, purchase, no pushy sales.
