sweetsly Posted March 19, 2007 #1 Share Posted March 19, 2007 We will be in Skagway in mid July and have heard concerns about booking tours in the mornings because of fog. We therefore have decided to do the dog mushers camp tour in the morning and save the White Pass train ride for the afternoon to have clear views of the scenery Any thoughts on this would be appreciated! Alaska05 Posted March 19, 2007 #2 Share Posted March 19, 2007 We've done both but not in the same year. Did the train in the afternoon and it was beautiful. The year we did the dog mushers camp the weather was drizzly rain and it was a bit muddy at the camp. I'm glad I didn't sit in the front row of the "sled on wheels." Hope you have enough time to "clean up" before taking the train just in case you have not so nice weather in the morning.

The dog musher's camp at Caribou Crossing in the Yukon is great, and quite a bit less expensive than the ship's tour! We really enjoyed renting a car and driving over the Pass ourselves, and combining it with the mushers at Caribou Crossing. Check out our report and pictures at The Halls Alaska Cruise We did run into fog at the top of the pass and if we had only gone that far on the train would have been disappointed, but we broke out of the fog on the other side and had beautiful scenery. (Incidentally, Michelle who runs the camp at Caribou Crossing finished sixth in the Yukon Quest this year. Way ta go, girl!) I think some of the ships are also offering a combination trip where you can ride the train to the top of the pass and then bus into Caribou Crossing. You could sign up for that and then make a reservation at the musher's camp independently on the net. Have a GREAT cruise!
