serial_traveler Posted March 19, 2007 #1 Share Posted March 19, 2007 Hi there, does anyone know if the shopping area for Belize City is near the pier or is there another area safer where the tender boat drops us off. How often do the boats go back and forth to the ship? We will be on the 5 day sailing of the Pearl on 3/25/07. :) Thanks. chris2597 Posted March 20, 2007 #2 Share Posted March 20, 2007 The tender boats run constantly. The shopping is in the secured peir area where you will be tendered to. The peir area is surrounded by a very high metal fence with gaurds at the entrances. The pier area has a lot of shopping, restaurants, bars and entertainment. On our first cruise to Belize we ventured out of the secured area to a small street market that sits across from the peir. We didnt see any bargains at the street market and prices compared to what was being sold in the secured area. We were immediately approached once on the street by locals trying to either sell us something, offer us a tour, or just plain beg for $$. A couple of the locals blocked the entrance back into the port when we tried to leave the street area and re-enter. A very large security gaurd at thae gate removed them from the sidewalk and ushered us through the gae. We were a little leery about leaving the port area as there were several locals hanging on the fence trying to beckon the tourists there way. It was a rather weird scene. I think it is fine to venture out of the port if you are with a reputable tour guide. On our last trip to Belize we stayed in the port area and shopped, had lunch and enjoyed the area. Latvish Posted March 22, 2007 #3 Share Posted March 22, 2007 When we were in Belize in November they were doing more construction at the pier. There is a good amount of shopping if you hit every store. On the left there is a mall and then there is an open air market area. Then another mini mall followed by an area like a curved strip mall. There is like a good 2 hours of shopping if you hit every store. We have been there a few times and my better half likes to get sundresses. And the best prices were on the right side of the mall in a little hut facing the waterfront. They were like 12 dollars versus 20 to 25 inside the mall. Make sure you grab a Belize beer. V ery tasty. And just chill about the typo's. Everyone is not perfect and after searching the threads I can gurantee it Steve. The boards are for info and everyones thoughts should be treated with respect. Everyone tries to help those that have never been somewhere and that is what is so cool. Think about it 5 to 6 years ago the only way people could find out info about the different ports was to go to the library. We are so fortunate to have these boards for quick info.
