Mike Andrews Posted March 31, 2007 #3 Share Posted March 31, 2007 Bari Cathedral is the resting place of St Nicholas and the nearby town of Alberobello is the main tourist attraction being famous for its trulli houses

Mike Andrews Posted April 1, 2007 #5 Share Posted April 1, 2007 Alberobello is a real great looking town made mostly of the stone built Trulli houses and makes for a good half day trip
Jo42 Posted May 6, 2007 #6 Share Posted May 6, 2007 Try this link for some information. http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/967fc/260dd/4/ We are still trying to decide whether to spend the afternoon on the ship or to get off and wander round the town. We dont usually do the ship's tours either but prefer to do our own thing.
mpb43 Posted May 6, 2007 #7 Share Posted May 6, 2007 Jo42, Thanks for the great link! I was also having a lot of difficulty finding much information about Bari.
krennen Posted May 6, 2007 Author #8 Share Posted May 6, 2007 I would also like to thank you Jo42 for the website. Bari seems to be one of the less touristy or popular stops on the cruise so the information out there is rather limited.
jesse Posted May 7, 2007 #9 Share Posted May 7, 2007 We were off a ship two summers ago in Bari, but it was Sunday, and it was deserted! We took a cab to see some of the beatiful sites, then went to the area where St. Nicholas chapel is, as well as did a little shopping and had something to eat. We were not there for a long stretch, so taking the taxi worked best for us-we were trying to get as many scenic and local pictures as possible because my grandmother was born there. It has a beautiful marina area, i was surprised at just how beautiful it is.
xander Posted May 8, 2007 #10 Share Posted May 8, 2007 We too like to do our own thing and are unsure what to do in this port. We are going to be there on the 29th of may. Some websites say that it is unsafe to walk around ? Is it any more unsafe that any other big city ? I know Naples has a major pick-pocket problem but we felt safe wondering round there. Any coments welcome !
Jo42 Posted May 8, 2007 #11 Share Posted May 8, 2007 My husband recently spoke to someone from the region who said the old town is best avoided late at night. As we are there in the afternoon we thought we'd maybe just have a wander around. The new part of the town looks like any other 'modern' city, built on a grid formation and has two main shopping streets. Bearing in mind the shops will be closed till about 4pm and we will be due back on board around 5pm, the old town and marina area sounds like the best bet to me. xander Posted May 8, 2007 #12 Share Posted May 8, 2007 I think you might be right , a walk around the old town by day will be fine. We'll be there in 3 weeks time so will let you know what we thought.
