Staterooms and smoking

My husband and I are not smokers so would normally book a non-smoking room. I looked on the Celebrity site and it states that all staterooms are smoking rooms and none are non-smoking rooms. We are sailing on the Mercury through Alaska 9/12-24. We are in room 9135 and unfortunately I think that is the smoking side of the ship. So we may smell it from neighboring rooms on the verandah if it drifts over. Does anyone know if the rooms smell of cigarette smoke? Living in California I'm so used to everything being non-smoking I forgot to mention it when we booked. I know our cruise is completely booked so our chances of switching a room are probably zero. Any and all information is appreciated.

Thanks!

Lydia

We are even worse. We are non-smokers who used to smoke! We have been on 8 cruises on 5 different lines and never had a problem with smoke smell in the rooms. Believe me, I would have smelled smoke if it were there. So either, the smokers smoke elsewhere or they have the best cleaning materials in the world!

On our first cruise on the Century we were on the left side of the ship and our cabin was directly beneath the casino. The smoke coming from there permeated down into our room so badly, you could smell it coming out of the hairdryer! We had someone come in to freshen but decided never to book on the left side or under the casino again.

It varies from ship to ship as to which side is smoking in the public areas. All cabins allow smoking both inside and on the balconies. Over the years there has been much discussion on these boards about the "can you smell smoke in the cabins" issue. Apparently with the ventillation system and the cleaners they use, most people are very satisfied with the results.

In the public areas they do not allow any smoking in the dining rooms or the theater, but almost all other areas have a smoking area. The casino is the area that is commented upon most about being smoky throughout.

Lydia...... I have been on three Celebrity ships, one of which was the Mercury.

I, too...am a non-smoker.

I have never smelled smoke/residual in any of the rooms.

This, to me...is amazing. Whatever they are using....they need to sell it to hotels/motels.

The only place that I ever had an issue with the smoke...was in the casinos.

Do not worry. Celebrity will take care of your cabin! :)

This information is off of the Celebrity Website:

Smoking is allowed on the port side of most public lounges and deck.

Pipe and cigar smoking is not permitted in public lounges.

Smoking is not allowed in all dining venues and in the Show Lounge.

Smoking is allowed in suites/staterooms.

There are no non-smoking staterooms.

With maybe the exception of being under the casino, I don't think it matters what side of the ship your on. I'm a smoker (sorry) and I'm booked into the "no smoking" side of the ship, where I will smoke in my cabin only. I never walk down the halls with a cig. Not as many smokers as there were 10 or 20 yrs. ago (wonder why).

Most smokers (including me) are pretty considerate on cruise ships (except the casino...I think where it can be bad)...we always have a balcony cabin...so I only smoke out there....my HB doesn't smoke so I try to be nice to him too. I never smoke in my house, either cause I can't stand the smell. And I agree with previous posts....we NEVER ask for a non-smoking cabin, yet I have never smelled the stench of smoke...which I hate.

I was concerned about the same thing, I hate smoke. I am pretty much repeating what everyone else said, but just so you have more opinions. Our room did not smell at all, and the whole ship smells clean and is very clean. Except for a few places. The casino, of course, it has a non-smoking side, but that is kind of a joke, as the whole thing smells like smoke. But, that would be the same in any casino, not just on a ship, so it is no big deal. There is an atrium with an indoor pool on the mercury, and it has a smoking side, and I didn't like that because sometimes you could smell it in the whole thing, but that was only occasionally. They were having a children's activity there one day and people were smoking around the kids, and I thought that was not a good idea, but oh well. Aside from those two places, smoking was not a problem.

My husband is always the first one to say he can tell the previous person in a room/cabin was a smoker. This will be our first time with Celebrity, on the Mercury to the Mexican Riviera 12/06/04, and I hope the previous posters are correct when they say the rooms have no odor of smoke. Our last cruise was back-to-back on the Carnival Paradise in May of 2003. It was so nice to be on a ship where smoking was totally prohibited. Unfortunately, the ship was their lowest money maker, so I belive the Paradise will not be "smokeless" starting this fall. It was strange walking into the casino and not having smoke permeating the room..... Anyway, we will hope for the best and enjoy our cruise regardless of the air quality!!

I don't remember the smoke being bad anywhere I went on the ship, even in the casino. I'm a non-smoker myself. One thing I don't understand, and this is just my opinion, is why they don't allow cigar and pipe smoking in all lounges. I think it should be allowed in at least one. To me cigars and pipes smell a hell of a lot better than cigarettes.

We absolutely could not use our balcony on the Summit because everyone around us smoked. Any time we'd open the sliding door, smoke would rush into our room. I hated that we paid for a balcony we could not use, but eyes run and my nose and throat closes around smoke. Then there was the time we were on the Century. No balcony, but somehow smoke kept getting into our room. I woke every morning to the smell of cigarrette smoke. Actually, it was my clogged nose that woke me. I complained to guest services, but it didn't help. What it boils down to is this: Luck.

Our stateroom on the Millie faced a "Crew Only" door behind which the crew would congregate and smoke. Our hallway stunk! Every time I walked out of my stateroom I was assaulted with the smoke smell.

Fortunately it didn't enter the cabin.

I thought that port side was for smokers, but that is true but public areas not staterooms. We are non-smokers & specify non-smoking rooms wherever we stay but on a cruise with the balcony, we haven't had any troubles.

We are non- smokers. Our transatlantic crossing on the Constellation was almost ruined by the cigar and cigarette smoke drifting into our balcony. We were on the starboard side. But, smoking is allowed in all the cabins. We could never leave the door open and almost had to retreat from the balcony as soon as it began. It was very annoying. Everything else on the Consteallation was wonderful. If only Celebrity would have a non-smoking ship !!!!!!!!!!

I am a smoker,. I have NEVER smoked in any of the cabins even if it were permitted. Likewise, I never book a smoking room at any hotel. I always leave the building to indulge. At Xmas we had a Sky suite on the Century and I would discretely smoke on the balcony. I never smoke inside any building even my own home. For those who have problems with the smell of smoke might I offer my apologies on behalf of those who apparently do not care about anyone else.

Two cabins on our left had cigar smokers who smoked from 7 a.m. throughout the day on a 15 day Hawaiin Cruise. Many sea days we were not able to use the balcony. We had relief when they were off the ship in port. Did not stop when we asked. Not much can be done about it as they are allowed to smoke on balconies.

now I'm getting worried. we'll have our first balcony cabin on Millennium this December (the price was right). we are nonsmokers (both of us smoked for a few years in very early adulthood, more than 20 years now smoke-free) with a grade-schooler. are we really likely to be inundated by smoke? do the smokers all book balconies? we are booked around midship, right where the decks start getting bigger, in the 7100's. and by the way, why DON'T they have smoking/nonsmoking rooms? hotels do ...

A comment about the Casino. Yes it can get pretty thick. I'm sure even the no smoking side probably smells of smoke to non smokers but even being a smoker, I have moved there many times because even I couldn't stand it. The non smoking side was a total relief. Unless of course you happened to sit next to the European lady who was smoking anyway and put her butts out on the carpet. I did point this out to an attendant because I didn't want them thinking, at the end of the evening, that those butts were mine. Nothing was done. You have to wonder.
