Evangelical University Group on Zuiderdam -

If a religious group charters a ship of course everything will be done as they wish- bars and casino closed, etc. But there is no way I will believe that if a large group just books a number of rooms as a group that the cruiseline will close the bars or casinos for all pax. They would have a mutiny on their hands plus all that lost revenur.Just wouldn't happen. It would have to be a full ship charter where HAL would be compensated for loss of normal bar/casino revenues.

I was thinking the same thing Peaches.

I don't know any cruise line that will take that big of a financial hit closing off the bars and the casino to several thousand passengers (depending on the ship) because of a couple hundred people.

Full charter sure ...otherwise no

Just because they group has an official policy does not necessarily mean that the members will be giving you the "sinner repent before you burn in hell" sermon.

And if they do it's not only you that has to worry. I wouldn't want to be on a ship with a group that will evangelize anyone in sight. Could you picture them showing up at a Jewish service on Friday night!!!

"Maitre'd, I need to have my table changed".

Biola is not a bible college like Jim Jones University of some of the others where you go to learn how to be a preacher. They've got a full range of majors including business, math, and physics and is very highly-rated academically.

We have a similar Christian-oriented college here in Santa Barbara -- Westmont College. It's the same thing -- the students are not there to get a religious education, they're there to get a real-life education in a Christian setting. The college and the students blend in very well in what is one of the most liberal parts of one of the most liberal states in the country.

Having a group from Biola on my cruise wouldn't bother me a bit.

Did this turn into an interesting thread or what? I think that the OP got more than they bargained for.:D

Personally, I believe that I have enough work to do trying to keep myself out of Hell, I don't need to waste my time telling everyone else how to live. Plus that whole scripture about "Judge not lest ye be judged" keeps coming to mind.

All this crazy talk about bars being closed is starting to really freak me out though - 10 nights in a cabin the size of my closet WITH my DH and WITHOUT single drink would truly be H**L. :D I need a drink now :)

I know , like they expect me to be sitting on my balcony smoking a joint and cannonballing it with iced tea ????????? Come on lets be serious :)

If it is 20 people, I probably won't even see them. If 200, we might reschedule.

Maybe this will help. I sailed with a group of 135 students from Oral Roberts University...evangelical Christians....on a Carnival cruise out of Galveston. No special arrangements were made to cater to them, (i.e., the bars were not closed.) The students were expected to abide by the honor code of the school while cruising. (Similar to Biola's honor code.)

The night before disembarking, the Captain visited with the leader of the group (one of the professors) and told him it was the best group of college kids he had ever had on one of his ships and that he had received numerous positive compliments from both crew and passengers....and not a single complaint.

I guess if I'd known about cruise critic back then, I may have seen a thread similar to this about that group. However, it really was a non-issue.

Enjoy your cruise...whichever one you choose! :)

I took the advice and called Inspiration Cruises to inquire how many people had made reservations for Biola cruise. The lady on the phone said they were holding space for 200-300 but no one had made reservations yet.

Is this unusual since it is 6 months away?

The reason for my apprehension is that we are gay couple and don’t want to feel uncomfortable while on vacation. We sailed with Holland American before and had a wonderful time; this is why we are returning to the Zuiderdam.

I don’t know much about evangelical Christianity but researched and found many books, lectures and papers by Biola alums on “overcoming homosexuality”. This coupled with their close ties to James Dobson and “Focus on the Family” are making me think we should cancel this cruise and book another HAL cruise.

I'd probably not cancel. I'd go and have a good time. If anyone has issues, it's their problem, not yours.

Not long ago, I watched the Rosie cruise special. What really made me sad was how a group of people in the Bahamas picketed this cruise group. They were yelling all sorts of things...and all I could think of was how sad. How sad for those couples and how sad those children had to be exposed to such hatefulness.

Then you have the Anna Nicole Smith thing going on in the Bahamas. We still don't know who the daddy is of the little girl. It's reported she did drugs when she was pregnant. Who knows what role her boyfriend/daddy wanna-be played in her death, or the son's. And they seem to worship her and this circus act that is following after her death. That poor little baby girl.

So you've got a group of people who love one another and their children and they are treated like there's something wrong with them, and then you have the Anna Nicole thing where her and the others in this saga are idolized.

It makes no sense to me.

The only thing that organization on your cruise needs to "overcome" is their ignorance.

I hope you have a wonderful cruise! :)

Oh, yeah.... we still need to discuss our music preferences.... FRANK ZAPPA, perhaps? (This is sounding like a FUN cruise!)

Zappa works for me :)

Could pipe in "In A Gadda Da Vida" in the dining room.

Of course we need some movies to watch and goof on *LOL*

Eraserhead

Faces of Death

Clerks

I would say get some Teletubbies Videos , but that big baby in the sun scares me . He might try and tip the ship over.

How about a screening of the EVIL DEAD movies and Rob Zombie's "House of 1,000 Corpses" in the Crows Nest? :)

Come on, Tom C. !!!!! You KNOW you want to join us on this cruise! ;)

I wonder how long the cruise has been advertised? If they only started advertising the special a few days ago, maybe that's why nobody has booked yet.

If it has been advertised for weeks or months, maybe you don't have to worry about it after all since it seems nobody is interested :o

No worries - thanks for the clarification. I just get tired of hearing all of the Christian bashing from supposedly "tolerant" individuals. Good to know that you are not one of the bashers.

I'm a Christian. :)

I don't like Christian Bashing. Neither do I like Jew bashing, Muslim bashing, Hindu bashing, Buddhist Bashing ... etc.

But idiot bashing, on the other hand, can be a fun sport. :D

Only if it can be the third Evil Dead film ... the first one really was creepy ... and the second one was too.

How about the Rocky Horror Picture show????

It's been about 15 years since I last did the Time Warp.

Most of the fun of going to that show were all those who could do the lines and dressed up as characters!!!!! :D
