BigBrit Posted April 5, 2007 #1 Share Posted April 5, 2007 Just came back from a week on the Jewell of the Seas. We went with a group of High School Seniors most of them 18 a couple of them will be 18 within a month. RCL has adopted a strict under 18 curfew which if you are travelling with a 17 year old you should know about. At 1 O'Clock all teenagers are carded and the kids not 18 yet are sent back to their cabin (the one exception the group found out was in the Casino where it seems the curfew is not enforced at all). This of cousre encourages the group to either go to a single room which creates noise issues or hang out at the Casino (something the parents do not want). If you have a 17 year old who is travelling with 18 year old friends this is a major annoyance
lvtotrvl1 Posted April 5, 2007 #2 Share Posted April 5, 2007 I have to say, I applaud RCCL for this. Why should a 17 year old be out roaming a ship after 1am? I'm sure if there was a group of 17 year olds in the casino, it would not last long.
PH8 Posted April 5, 2007 #3 Share Posted April 5, 2007 Its really not that new a rule.........under 18 has to be accompanied by an adult after 1am.........thats fine by me........
vator90 Posted April 5, 2007 #4 Share Posted April 5, 2007 While that may appear to be a bit heavy handed, it is the rules. I am glad to see at least one ship in the fleet enforcing the curfew rules for a change.
bullsfan Posted April 5, 2007 #5 Share Posted April 5, 2007 I guess the "Mom" in me shows by saying I think this was a great job by the ship and crew to stand by their rule. I am sure the teens thought big ship, we can do what we want - whowoo!! And sad is it may be rules are rules on land and in the ocean. I am glad to hear that the ship did it's job. And I would have thought these kids all knew the rules before they ever got on the ship so it should not have been a surprise that the rules were indeed enforced. zuscruiserz Posted April 5, 2007 #7 Share Posted April 5, 2007 I, for another, am glad about this! On our cruise last month, my kids were 17 and 13, and they knew what was expected of them - stay together, and let us know where you are. They told us where they were going and when they would be back (a phone call was expected when they came back, and no, they didn't go out again - yes, we checked). Only once did they stay out after midnite, at the midnite buffet which we ok'd in advance, and they were back in their room before 1:00 a.m. I think RCI is more lenient than I am, 1:00 a.m. is too late when we're leaving at 8:00 a.m. that morning to go into port (we had NO sea days)! This makes for grumpy teens and more grumpy parents - lol ;) !!! On our next cruise (August), we might be a little less strict on curfew before a sea day, but only because they did as we asked on this past cruise. 1:00 a.m. is late enough!!! The bars won't make an exception for those just shy of 21 any more than the ship made an exception for those "almost" 18. For all of the rest of us traveling we are glad there are rules and curfews. It is for the welfare of all so that everyone can enjoy their vacation.
Autumnrose Posted April 5, 2007 #10 Share Posted April 5, 2007 I don't know......when I was 17 I stayed out until 2am all the time. We never did anything bad and never got in any trouble. I could understand if they were bothering people. But if they are just hanging out in a lounge and talking whats the harm. Maybe they should have someplace supervised just to hang out. PH8 Posted April 5, 2007 #11 Share Posted April 5, 2007 But if they are just hanging out in a lounge and talking whats the harm.. IF thats all they were doing....(BTW-not quite sure what lounge there is to hang out in and be outta others way??)
Cruising89143 Posted April 5, 2007 #12 Share Posted April 5, 2007 I just wish that RCI would enforce this rule fleet wide. It seems to vary by ship but good for the ones that enforced it on this ship. No kid under 18 should be wondering around a ship at 1:00 in the morning anyway. tinkerme1 Posted April 5, 2007 #17 Share Posted April 5, 2007 I, for one, am glad to see RCI taking a stand on curfew time. If these kids are under 18, they should be in their cabin, NOT in the hallways or anywhere else, but their cabin. Too often, cruising adults don't take the proper measures to know where their young kids/adults are located. Spring Break is particularly difficult for the crew. On our cruise on the Vision this past week, there was vandalism that occurred to a gentleman's scooter, late at night, and the kids involved were not all that young. Truthfully, I think 1:00 AM is a generous curfew for those under 18.
QM2 Cruiser Posted April 5, 2007 #18 Share Posted April 5, 2007 Thanks for telling us about the curfew, that's great news! I think 1:00am is too late for teenagers to be out and about loitering around the ship. Hopefully RCL will become more strict with all of their published policies and regulations. ERICV82GO Posted April 5, 2007 #20 Share Posted April 5, 2007 I'm very happy this rule is enforced!! On a past cruise on the Carnival Triumph, unsupervised teenagers were a constant problem late at night. I was sitting at a bar one night (late, like 1:30ish) with my buddy, who was 22 at the time, and he kept getting hit on by 2 girls who were probably 15. He didn't think it was funny; but I couldnt stop laughing!!

Nitra Posted April 5, 2007 #23 Share Posted April 5, 2007 The curfew is not new, and they enforce it more strongly during spring break. I will be curious to see how many youngins are out wandering, sneaking into the club etc late at night when I go in a few weeks. I think it should be enforced but I dont think it is the cruiseline responsibility to enforce, it is a parental job. When I was growing up just because we were on vacation did not change the rules including curfew. Curfew was 11pm during the summer, no matter what night it was and that was enforced on vacation by my parents.
max227 Posted April 5, 2007 #24 Share Posted April 5, 2007 "a group of teens just hanging out"??? at 1:00am. That in itself tells you there is a problem. Good job RCCL.
