Curfew

Recommended Posts

I am not so sure about curfews being enforced. I just got off the Grandeur with a 17 year old. As long as they are with a counselor they could stay out past one. But that only happened a couple of times. The counselors were great with the kids. The rest of the time, the kids just hung out. Call me a bad parent, but he was out with his friends later than 1:00 every night. He wasn't drinking, just hanging out. :)

Yes, the only exception to the curfew policy that I know of is if the Teen is engaged in an AO activity sponsored and chaperoned by an AO staff member. My understanding is that those typically wrap up around 1:00 or 2:00 AM so it is not much past the curfew to begin with.

I am not sure that I would call you a bad parent. What I wonder in this case is if you are sending the wrong message to your child by not enforcing the rules that are in place. Is the message that is being delivered; "You need to follow the rules; however, this one rule you don't need to follow and I support you not following this particular rule." an acceptable one to you?

Where does it lead in the Teens mind? So there are rules that need to be followed, but not all rules need to be followed and if I don't like a particular rule I am not going to follow it.

Why should the curfew have to be enforced in the Casino?? Anyone in there should be 18 or over to begin with. I've been on ships where the casino age limit is enforced and others where the staff seems to tolerate children in there with their parents. Personally, I find it annoying in the same way kids in the Solarium are annoying. I don't mind kids on the ship, but if there is an adults-only place to retreat to once in a while, I expect to see no children.

Because on the two ships I have been on; FoS and AoS, the casino was in a central part of the ship and you needed to walk through it to get from fore to aft on that deck. Since there was no card reader at either end, kids of all ages are able to walk right through.

What is to stop a 16 year old as they are walking through from dropping a quarter in one of the slot machines and "pulling the handle" and getting the winning jackpot with a HUGE payout? How should the ship handle that since legally the teen is not able to claim the winnings?

While I would like the Solarium to be an adult's only place, the same situation applies as the casino. The Solarium is in a position on the deck that makes it a channel for kids of all ages to get from fore to aft and vice versa. For me, the only truly Adult's-Only retreat for me on the ship is the privacy of my own stateroom. :D

Just got off the Brilliance and they were very strict about the curfew.. We saw them stopping young teenage girl at 1:15 am just about to go into a guys room who looked quite a bit older. The security officer said he was going to escort her to her parents room. We saw her several times after that ALWAYS with her parents.

OK so after skimming this thread, one of the points that I feel hasn't been addressed or stressed is the fact that RCI may not be enforcing this rule to avoid 'rowdy' teenagers, but may be enforcing it for the safety of them.

Even if you are the best behaved 17 year old girl, when you get tired and wander back to your cabin solo (even if it's not typical and you typically travel in groups) you don't know who you are going to encounter on your trip back.

I think the bottom line is RCI has this policy in place for reasons other than to 'ruin' a MINORS vacation, and is probably partly in place for the safety of their minor guests.

Good point.

Everyone says the kids hang out in groups. Well, if they all don't stay in the same stateroom, sooner or later the group becomes one. For safeties sake we should all help the cruise line enforce this rule with our own children. Perhaps if it were made to be an offense ,where lets say, first time past is a warning, second time would be to meet the parents, third time in the same cruise, they put you off in the next port. Wonder how many parents wouldnt mind seeing to it that the children were all in and accounted for.

I know what Jad7984 is saying. I live 3 towns over from him and curfews in CT are unheard of. That's probably why it shocks him so much and frankly it shocks me too. ,Thing is, towns in CT are very safe. Im not bragging but there is virtually no crime in my town and same for jad's town. Here in Fairfield County, parents would gasp if the town decided to impose a curfew. I guess that is just the mindset of people in this area.

Do they really have curfews in other states/towns? If so, I'm interested to know of the times.

Jad, congratulations on the new baby!

1am....wow....I think that is waaay late enough for any 17 and under to be roaming a ship....

It goes right with the new Ohio driving law that just passed for 17 and under drivers. NO driver at that age should be out that late at night. There's is nothing like inviting trouble.

jad7984, I agree with you. I follow rules even if I don't agree with them.

Where I grew up I am not sure if they had a city curfew or not. My friends and I were out til at least 2am all the time. We never got into trouble we just sat around and talked about nothing. I am glad that I have those memories of my friends we had some good times.

I am a parent but I am just glad that I still remember what it is like to be a kid. I do believe that it should be up to the parents. Because even though I was fine with the freedom I was given my oldest daughter could not handle that type of freedom with her personality. She is a definate follower. :( Oh well at least I can recognize it. But having said that I understand the reasoning. I did know some people in high school that had parents that thought they were angels and they were the complete opposite.

And these are the people who ruin it for everyone. I'm glad we're on the same page. I, too, stayed out very very late when I was 16-17, and I never caused trouble either. We would do what you did, talk, joke, dream. Nothing wrong with that. It's sad that some have to ruin it for all.

Anyone in this group old enough to remember having to be in the house when "the street lights came on"? Or sitting on someone's porch talking-and "someone's" Mom or Dad checking on the group from time-to-time? These days, teenagers seem to begin getting ready to go out at 9 PM. I'm sure it's difficult for them to have a curfew when they're just getting ready to start their evening. I do, however, believe they should follow the rules of the ship. Perhaps one of the clubs could become a chat area with a sign in/sign out document for those teens who don't want the club atmosphere. Can teens sit out on the deck with friends and a set of parents after 1:00 PM? By the way, I've seen adults who act like the teens they send to their cabin-can we get them a curfew, too?:D

SmilingCruiser:

Yes teens or any child under 18 can be out amongst the ship with a parent at any time of the am hours. They just can not roam on their own after 1:00a.m. I take my 15 yr old GD, and many nights, the friends she met may be involved in a scrabble game, a game of cards, etc. and I will sit with them in the Library or some other area of the ship, if it is after 1am and they want to continue being together. I have also invited the teens back to our cabin (which I really don't like to do, knowing I wouldn't want my teen in someone elses cabin) and they would sit and chat, play cards, etc. in the cabin. You are absolutely correct about some adults could use a curfew too! LOL. Some of them also look and act like they should of been put to bed at 7PM!

I agree with the rule, but I think 18 is a little old. I know it was an inconvenience for us when my kids were 17. I think 16 would be an ideal age for the curfew. I also thought it was a little strange that they were kicking 17 year old and under guests out of The Quest. I have a feeling 16 year olds know enough about that type of thing to be able to think the Quest is funny  !

The curfew was really not enforced on Sovereign this week. We saw quite a few teens around the ship as late at 2:30 AM. I guess it depends on which ship you are sailing on.

OMG that is so funny. My mom gave me the street lights rule and sometimes I would be furiously paddling my bike down the street as they came on behind me and my mom was watching for me on the front porch:D BTW we do have a pretty strict curfew here for teens. I live in a fairly crime free 'burb but can remember being pulled over by cops and escorted home because it was after curfew even though we were not doing anything. And I don't have a problem with that. Lots of years to stay out late after you are 18!

I expect one day I'll have children and I am just thrilled to know that there are so many busybodies running around to tell me how to be a parent. All kids are the same, after all, and what's good for one is good for them all. Amirite?

Ever with through the 12 item express lane with 13 items??

Ever sign your spouses name to a check to deposit??

Ever drive one mile over the speed limit?

I could go on and on!!!

Come on people letting a kid out after cerfew will not turn them into Charles Manson!! Lighten Up!!

Couldn't agree more. I disagree with a curfew on cruise ships for anyone.

Well, I honestly think that there shouldn't be a curfew. But there is, so I will abide by it. I will not go ahead and brake the rules. Im going to be in college for 3 months before I can stay out past one a.m on the ship. I can see why they do it, but I would prefer it the other way. Maybe I will change my mind when I become a parent, but right now its my belief. What I think is that this should go for anyone(including adults), you can stay out as late as you want (except if your parents have set certain rules) but if you act up in any way then you should be sent to your room.

IMHO.

I grew up in IL many moons ago and Illinois or maybe DuPage County; I can't remember which, had very strict Curfew laws. They were tied to labor and drivers licenses. I believe it was under 16 was 10 PM and if you were employed and had a vehicle, you could be out till midnight from 16 to 18.

I grew up in DuPage County, IL also! I had forgotten about the part of working after 10pm! How funny! You brought all that back! Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

Yikes. Guess he wasn't really thinking. I'm surprised he was able to walk away from a motorcycle accident just like that.

That reminds me of something that happened here in CT. A 17 year old kid got wasted, broke into a municipal airport in my county, stole a small plane, flew it to Westchester County Airport (NY) about 20 miles away, and landed it there at night with the runway lights turned off...safely! Needless to say, he's in a heap of trouble.

I'm normally not on the boards all day like this, but I got my wisdom teeth out yesterday so I have nothing better to do than browse CC and eat ice cream!!

feel better!!!!!! the ice cream helps a lot!

wow, thank goodness he is safe

but I can't imagine the amount of trouble hes in!
