Nassau-been there done that

We did Nassau on our first cruise together and hated it. We weren't very happy that this cruise included Nassau rather than a private island or Freeport. Last time we went we took a non air conditioned bus tour (that was supposed to have A/C according to the ship's excursion blurb) of the island that ended at Atlantis.

What can we do to have a little more fun? We don't like snorkeling unless it's off the beach because we get seasick on the boatride out to the reef. We're not into shopping and could care less about having another tour of the island.

Do you like gambling? Take a taxi over to Atlantis and have some fun. We walked through it the other day. I wish I could have stayed and played. If I ever go back to Nassau we will only go to Atlantis. I like to shop, but that straw market was something else. I hate trying to climb around people in shops like that one.

There's hotel beaches to enjoy, some quiet, some resorts, there's a zoo, a pirates museum, an historical walking tour. Senor Frogs to get drunk, Fish Fry for local food. Depending on the day.. there may even be a cultural event of two.

From the tone of your post, I don't think anything is really gonna interest you. Many people have a wonderful time in Nassau.. It's not just straw market and Atlantis.

Yeah, really. The fact your tour did not have A/C was not Nassau's fault. The fact you got seasick was not Nassau's fault. You're critizing the island for reasons that have nothing to do with the island.

If you didn't like Nassau, you'd hate Freeport.

I wish these boards had tone control.

I wasn't "mad" at Nassau, my husband and I thought parts of the island were beautiful. We were upset with the cruise tour group because they promised A/C in the blurb and it was 100 degrees in August when we took the tour. Although we were hot we did enjoy watching a game of cricket near one of the forts.

We were just looking to see if there were some interesting things to do (like watching the cricket game) that didn't involve riding in a boat. Thanks to the poster who suggested gambling, we may try out the casino. Can you still purchase a beach package for Atlantis once in Nassau? Or did they get rid of that?

We should add.. that to some bahamians.. a window that rolls down IS "air-conditioning".. lol

As for things to to.. What date are you arriving? There may be something happening in town.

Here's one Calendar that might be helpful

http://www.bahamasgo.com/may.htm

And in the summer months.. the Fish Fry Sponsors Junkanoo celebrations on the weekends.

Atlantis is hit or miss. Beach Packages are "sometimes" available. Sometimes not. On busy days..when they are near capacity. Day passes and Beach passes can disappear. Have a back up plan.

You cannot purchase beach/pool access to Atlantis anymore. You have to be a guest of comfort suites next door or Atlantis to use the facilities.

I have only been told that you can't purchase a pass to Atlantis. Is that mistaken?

From time to time, I see them available at the Casino Kiosk. Some day's I'll see the Beach Pass, other the Day Pass, others neither. The availability is supposed to be based on occupancy.

I haven't yet seen, or heard, of any consistancy.

Some have been lucky to arrive and get day passes ($105pp).. others turned away. I'd hate to plan my few hours at port on something that may or may not happen.

I'm told that at some point, they passes will be availbable as a cruise tour. But I haven't seen any evidence of that yet either. I think management is trying to figure this out as they go along.

Because we want to go to St. Maarten and St. Thomas and the only option was to go to Nassau. We are thankful we have another day in port rather than another day at sea.

Sheesh! Another poster was right, this board has become hostile since my last cruise in August. People used to be nice, now they're so judgemental. I thought the women on the bridal boards were mean!

I'm sorry you thought I was being mean....that was NOT my intention. I ASSUMED you were doing a Bahamas only cruise since it wasn't mentioned at the start which other ports you were visiting. If it was, I wouldn't have said anything...but now it makes more sense that this is just ONE of many stops for you.

I apologize for my "hostility"....

Have a great trip!

... I liked Freeport but didn't care for Nassau. Freeport was less stressful -- had a lovely time there at the beach and on the water.

Nassau is truly what you make it.

There are so many choices of activities and places to see- there just has to be something for everyone. We had a great time there last year and will be going back in a week.

Last year we went to Cabbage Beach, to Atlantis, & to Ardastra Gardens by surrey. This year, we plan to do the day pass at the British Colonial Hilton, visit the Pirate Museum, the Junkanoo Expo, and shop on Bay St.

If cruisers just stay near the pier, they won't get the full benefit of what Nassau offers. Get out and about and you'll most likely have a good time.
