Cozumel - Pesos or American $ ?

Do Cozumel cabs take American $ or pesos? What about shops & beach clubs?

Mexican cab drivers are notorious for saying they don't have any change after you give them a large bill so they can rip you off.

They all keep their bills in their shirt pocket. I had to get nasty with a few and point out their bill stash to get my change.

Always go by the pursers desk or casino to get small bills (1, 5 & 20) before going ashore. The taxi ride to downtown is $6 US per cab not PP. All shops take US dollars. When haggling price always round to 5 or 10 to avoid ones. Most small shops will haggle with you, even on jewelry or leather goods. The futher off the plaza square you venture the better the deals. Most will return change in pesos so exact amounts is needed unless you want to bring home some peso. The general exchange rate at the market to 10 peso's to 1$US. The actual exchange rate is about 11 to 1. The signs will be marked in both.
