Directional Compass

There will be some effect from the steel of the ship - however, the magnetic deviation will be small, only a few degrees, usually less than 10.

 

Magnetic north and true north are not co-incidental - iif you are cruising south of Alaska, they can differ by 20 degrees, and this affects any compass in that part of the world, ship-board or not!
