Journey Drydock

Norm, the reason I used the word "Freestyle" is because when we received our deposit confirmation, it stated on the receipt that dining was freestyle. I'm not planning to get into an argument over it. I know what our TA meant by that so enough said.

One reason I don't post over here much anymore is because every word is picked over and I'm tired of having to watch my "p's" and "q's". This board used to be so friendly.

With only a couple of weeks left before the first sailing, I am going to start a new post called "Things to ask first Journey Cruisers" Let's put together a list of questions and ask the folks who are on the may 5 cruise to note the answers and post them when they get back. Look for my post. I am also going to put a message on the thread for the May 5th cruise asking them to read our post to get our list.

I truly hope you are incorrect. When I go to the Celebrity website, pick "plan a cruise/ships/quest/deckplans" and select one of the SVs, it says the stateroom area is 215 sq ft and the balcony area is 54 (same for all the veranda cabins). I'd hate to think one of their premium cabins is only 161 sq ft, but that seems to be the size of the ocean views and most of the interiors. I'm holding on to the idea that stateroom area does not include the balcony. Time will tell.

I am very familiar with these "R" class ships and especially the aft cabins.

All veranda cabins are the same 161 square feet with the balcony square footage added to that. The new sky suites being added on deck 8 will be 240 square feet with again the balcony square footage to be added.

Inside cabins are all 151 square feet.

The added advantage of the SV cabins is that the balcony is bigger than the standard balconies on the sides of the ship (with deck 6 being the biggest and reducing in size as you go up to deck 8).

All of these ships were built identical except for some that did not originally have the 8th deck full of penthouse suites (Celebrity is referring to them now as sky suites).

The cabins on these ships are indeed very small but the ship itself (prior to Celebrity modifications as noted in previous post) is incredibly beautiful.

Thanks for adding nothing..

my cuz in Franklin will extend my gratitude.

For your information, I was addressing my reply to Lucy. She asked a question and I answered it.

If you would take the time to read my other posts, you will see that I have gone into detail about what I have learned about Journey. If your cuz makes it into Brentwood, I'm sure he/she will notice me right away. I'll be the one wearing the CSA tee shirt.

(celebrity special agent).

Hi Garry,

You make a good point...

Thanks, Mr. Tucker.

Well, I'm both disappointed and excited. We have an aft SV for the April 2008 transatlantic. And while a lot of our "cabin time" is spent on the balcony so that's good, I have to hope the cabin is well laid out with storage as we will be getting off the Quest and onto the Legend of the Seas for a Med cruise and will have the maximum-allowed amount of clothes/luggage.

We usually sail in Celebrity CC class which has about 191 sq feet of cabin or RCCL D1 which is around 205, so 161 is going to feel small. Other than finding a place for all our "stuff", I am sure we will have a great time. We chose the Quest precisely for the idea that the ship was smaller and more intimate and had no idea about cabin size (and didn't really care). When I saw the deck plan and saw 215 sq feet for the cabin and 54 for the balcony, I was pleasantly surprised. But if it's 161/54, we'll do just fine.

Since all of my cruising experience has been on Celebrity or RCCL with traditional dining (is that trademarked by anyone?), anything else seems like "freestyle" to me. I'm not really into nuances so if there are options like showing up anytime and taking the first available table, calling ahead and then getting whatever is available at that time or reserving a particular table, it's all "non-traditional" to me and "freestyle" is as good a term as any.

having preferred cc cabins on the millie class ships, I was concerned, but pleasantly surprised that the veranda cabins on the r class ships were comfortable and fine. These ships are elegant, give you a more personal and classy experience. We also enjoyed open seating (we did not experience any real wait) and country club casual (I previously enjoyed and respected the dress codes on x) , but found it's easier to pack for longer trips and I was quite confortable. We're looking forward to a SA cruise on Journey in Feb, 08. Please review your cruises and comments on your ship. Enjoy!

Bob and Garry:

You won't be disappointed with the aft cabin. Well laid out and plenty of storage (small bathrooms though). Enjoy your cruise, although it is a year away.

We are booked with Oceania for two more cruises and depending upon the comments from Journey and Quest we may come back to Celebrity for another try. We are definitely sticking with the smaller ships from now on though. Much better suited to our desires.

As an aside I too agree that there is alot of nit picking with regard to the choice of words used in this thread/forum. We all know what the intent of the statement was - so why belabor it.

Mr. Tucker -- I guess I stand corrected about the cabin square footage, etc. I don't think I'll be disappointed though. I'm just excited about the new experience of trying one of these ships.

Bob -- which aft cabin do you have??? For the very first time we have one as well for our March 1st sailing:) .

Garry -- don't go away:( -- just ignore any nitpicking:p Also, I believe we have the same TA and my deposit confirmation didn't say the dining option was freestyle, it said late seating. Actually, it doesn't make any difference to me:D -- I'll eat anywhere, anytime!!

Mari -- I'll be sure to read your posts. You obviously have lots of information for me to digest.

JPH814 -- I agree, great idea -- we all want to hear about that first cruise:eek:

Just reviewed the deck plans from the Celebrity site for this ship. It is a shame as it appears that they have removed some of the nicer areas that the R class ships were originally constructed with.

For example:

1. The beautiful library is gone and replaced with Michaels Club/Cigar Bar.

2. The lounge/martini bar by the casino with all the overstuffed chairs is gone and replaced with a larger casino. The present casino, albeit a little small, certainly was capable of serving the much smaller number of passengers and is frequently empty.

3. The casual quiet lounge outside the dining room has been replaced with a Martini Bar. This undoubtedly will add to the noise level in the dining room as they are not separated by full height walls.

4. The nice open area with comfortable seating at the top of the grand staircase has been replaced with the cova cafe with no seating.

5. The main reception area which was once spacious with overstuffed chairs has been made smaller with the addition of a boutique store. The grand staircase will probably not look so grand anymore.

6. The card/games room has been removed and the spa has been expanded into that area with an acupunture room. They now have absolutely no facilities for people to play bridge or other table games other than going to the buffet dining area.

I think the biggest losses are the library, card room and the original martini bar. Large open public spaces have been replaced with money making venues which, in my opinion, is not necessary for this small population ship as there are many areas that currently go unused most of the day. There is also a clear absence of any childrens facility.

To me, a big fan of the R class ships, this is truly a very dissapointing move on the part of Celebrity to destroy some of the beautiful ambience that was originally a design feature and selling factor of these ships. It appears the almighty bottom line dollar has taken over the management of this ship. Unfortunate for the future passengers that they are not going to see this ship in what was its true glory.

The library will stay the library at least for most of the time during a day. It's at night that one will be able to get a drink, as if one NEEDED to drink in the library...........Will wait to see on this one............baffles:D

I just dug out some old literature for Renaissance. They list the balcony cabins as 173 square feet plus 43 square foot balcony.

They do not list what X is calling SV cabins as a separate entity.

This is from Renaissance publication AJ4TAv2. I have several other of their publications giving the same information.

Well, the numbers are all over the place. I don't plan to take a tape measure so whatever they tell me is OK. We'll have a great time, but I will be looking for posts to say that the cabin "felt big" or "felt small". I'm still lokking forward to the cruise. Heck, I look forward to all my cruises.

Well, I am taking a tape measure and if my cabin is not 254 sq ft as advertised on Celebrity's web site, I will demand a refund based on my fare divided by the actual square footage, of coarse if its larger then mums the word.

Hi Phil!!! So nice to "see" and "hear" from you again. It's been a long time.

Bob, I received the new brochure from our TA yesterday. DH and I were looking at it last night. It seems to answer most of the questions about the Quest that we had -- except of course for cabin sizes:)

In the end, it doesn't really matter does it? As you said, we are on a cruise.

Take care,

Lucy

1. The beautiful library is gone and replaced with Michaels Club/Cigar Bar.

Michaels Clubs are no longer CIGAR bars, but PIANO bars, from all I have heard and read.

If someone knows any different about ANY of the Michaels Clubs permitting cigar smoking, please post that information.

We don't want to smell cigar smoke!

For that matter, libraries should be off-limits to all tobacco smoke, day and night.

I agree with someone who posted the lack of need to drink in the library in the evening. I hope Celebrity keeps the libraries as they originally were, i.e. as LIBRARIES, and chooses another locale for a lounge.
