Should we use locks

I'm sure that this is a silly question, but as a newbie I was just wondering, if we should put locks on our luggage or not. How do they screen all that luggage? I don't want to use locks but, DH has a fear of our clothes falling out:eek: . We are driving, so no airport screening for us. Just wondering:confused:

Okay I've thought and thought about this, and can't figure out how you'd get the zip ties off. You can't carry scissors on the ship with you.

Most carry nail clippers in an external pocket.

The zip-ties I use have a self-release tab on them, so they are reusable.

Locks or zip ties are not going to keep anyone from stealing from you bags (heck... a razer blade would work wonders to get into a bag to steal), but they will keep honest people honest and keep you zippers from coming undone.

Venture, do the self-release ties work as good? i mean have you ever had any come loose before?

I was thinking about using them also because last time all our suitcases arrived except the one with the nail clippers in the side pouch:eek:

it showed up about 11pm, we had to go get a knife from the dining room to cut the ties off the rest in the mean time.

It says right in my Cruise Docs to bring "locked" luggage. Zip Ties are great. You can use the extras for zip tying your towel to a pool chair for the whole day while you are out enjoying the ship! :) (don't flame me it was a joke)

I really hate it that you can't lock luggage at the airports anymore. :(

Would you beleive I use colored pipe cleaners on my zippers? I started doing this when you weren't even allowed to have nail clippers! I guess the TSA was worried about someone be trimmed to death.

Anyhow, my vote goes with zip ties for the airport, and the crappy little locks for the ship.

You can actually lock your luggage when you fly IF you use TSA approved locks. You can buy them on-line, at Brookstone, most luggage stores. They are combination locks that TSA has a master key for just in case they want to search your luggage.

We flew last week with the TSA locks on our luggage. When we got home and opened the "locked" luggage, there was a note inside from TSA that our luggage had been opened and searched. They relocked the luggage because of the TSA locks too.

We've been using the TSA locks the last few years. They come in many colors including lime green, bright pink, blue, black, and silver. Cost is approx. $10 each. Often come in multiple pack of two for $15.

Thanks for all your replies... :D Looks like DH is going to win this time. We will be putting locks on our luggage. I really liked the pipe cleaner idea too. That may make it easier to find our luggage after the cruise.

Happy Cruising:cool:

We use the zipties.. and bring a cutter with us in the outside pocket of one of the suitcases.. nailclippers don't always work as we used them before and they broke:mad:

TSA on our trip back did cut them off and we did have the note in all 5 of our bags that they were searched coming back thru FLL.. nothing missing tho:rolleyes:

You would first have to go to the casino to have a hole punched in it.:)

Once when we picked up our luggage off the carousel one of the bags was partially unzipped! That is what I want to use the pipe cleaners for. To make sure this does not happen again. I just hope the airline replaces them after they inspect my luggage.

Once on a trip we brought back a cute stuffed animal bird that when you squeeze it makes a cute squawking noise. Very distinctive. After we checked our luggage, when we were waiting for our flight, we could see the line of inspectors from the waist up working. All of a sudden I heard the BIRD! :) I knew they did mine for sure!

TSA locks are available at Walmart for very little money. I bought nine of the key locks for under $10 total recently. They are much better than the garbage locks that come with most luggage.

TSA will not replace your pipecleaners.. only TSA approved locks

I use Lox on my bagels all the time.

Oh wait, you meant locks.

Generally, we don't use them. I figure if the TSA has keys to them, that means the keys are most likely everywhere so what is the point. But since you are driving, I would go ahead and lock them if it would give you some peace of mind.

We have always used zip ties. We've never had a problem or issue with putting a small pair of scissors or nail clippers in an outside (unlocked) zippered pocket of our suitcase. We always tip the porters well and never have a problem getting our bags. :-).
