Costa Maya and Beaches

I have a question, we cruised to Costa Maya several years ago and all I remember is the shopping area at the port. There was not much to do except take a tour that was considered a day at the beach. It was not one of the beaches that are being discussed here. It was called Uvero Beach. Has the port built up since then or did they just open up this area to tourist? The Cat's Meow etc. It sounds great and we are planning on going here to have the coconut shrimp and drinks this time.

per the board we got off ship and walked directly through tourist trap area at dock and caught cab $3.00 each to Mahajaul. First stand on beach offered snorkel tour for my family of 4 for $60.00, had the shrimp tacos and shrimp Chevias? (marinated salad) they were out of conch! Outstanding!:)

Located 20 miles north of the fishing village of Mahahual on the Costa Maya, Uvero is the location of white sand beaches and old growth coconut palms. The name Uvero, which means grape in English, was given to this part of the Costa Maya for a good reason. Many sea grape trees (a relative of the almond tree) grow wild on the coast in this area. For the native Mayan people these were and still are an important food source. Jelly made from sea grapes is especially delicious and sea grape wine is also to be recommended. This writer, for one, has enjoyed many a sunset on the beach with a fresh cooked lobster complimented with a chilled glass of sea grape wine.

 

Lobstering, fishing, diving, and snorkeling are popular at Uvero because of the many colorful reef formations and canyons of multi-color corals. Currently a restaurant, bar, dock, and marina are under development at Uvero and several condos and cabanas are now being built between Uvero and the Sian Ka'an wildlife reserve to the north.

 

Available ocean front lots in the Uvero area tend to be larger with higher elevations and taller palms. Because it is located only 8 miles south of the Sian Ka'an Reserve, wildlife is in abundance.
