Onboard credit - questions

I have a few questions about the onboard credit that travel agents offer.

I was told we'll find a certificate in our cabin. This credit will be deducted from our bill at the end of the cruise. I assume this can be used toward any onboard charge like alcohol, excursions (booked on the ship), gifts, etc. Are there any important restrictions I should know?

I like to book excursions in advance. Can I use this onboard credit and pay in advance? I kind of doubt.

Excursions booked in advance, you will have to pay with your credit card. If you wait until you board you can us the OBC for excursions. Other than that, basically what happens is they credit you onboard account. The onboard account isn't created until you board the ship
