sueclark Posted May 5, 2007 #1 Share Posted May 5, 2007 Hi all, What are your thoughts and experiences with the aft cabins on promenade deck - SY 198 & 199 and AA 196 & 197? Does the main deck area get a lot of use on the longer voyages? Although the SY cabins have a private verandah area, it doesn't look like you could see much from within them. Are the cabins quite dark because of the overhang of the deck above?
ookpik Posted May 6, 2007 #2 Share Posted May 6, 2007 We had #196 ,sailing from Boston to Montreal..it was a super spot with larger balcony andlots of room plu a walk-in closet. The balcony has no overhang so lots of weather!!(Good and bad) There is a hot tub, used by very few(Me) and the deck is small but unoccupied. Wouldn't go for the SY rooms, although they look very spacious,I think that their "Balcony" is the aformentioned deck. You will love 196/197!! Bon Voyage! ookpik Posted May 6, 2007 #3 Share Posted May 6, 2007 P.S. On second thoughts, the SY's had an enclosed portion which was more like a covered patio than a balcony. In other words no view or sun at all.
sueclark Posted May 6, 2007 Author #4 Share Posted May 6, 2007 Thanks much! We have SY199 right now. We're still debating whether to move or not - our friends that had 198 have already moved up to 066. My thinking was that if the deck wasn't used by other passengers it would amount to a huge almost private balcony. Some of the old reviews say that it is marked as a private deck. Is this still true? Any other thoughts?
jrdoog Posted May 6, 2007 #5 Share Posted May 6, 2007 My wife and I have sailed on P'Dam twice, both times in 196. Our last TA cruise in May 2006, HAL (without prior notice to us or our TA) tried to "upgrade" us to 198 which we refused. While 198 and 199 are larger and thus categorized SY, the cabins are not as desirable IMHO. They are dark with minimal ocean view and a enclosed veranda which is like a fish bowl. The aft deck is a delightful area with minimal use except for the casino staff taking smoking breaks. I am willing to bet that once you can see and compare 196/7 to 198/9 the best choice will be obvious. Strongly suggest you avoid getting stuck in either of the two SY aft cabins.
