wilber1 Posted May 17, 2007 #1 Share Posted May 17, 2007 Everybody Keep Your Fingers Crossed That They Get The Mother And Her Calve Out Of The River Today. They Are Going To Try To Use Whales Sounds And An Under Water Speaker To Try To Get Them To Follow Them Out To Sf Bay. If That Does Not Work They Will Try To Herd Them Out With Several Boats. They Both Have Cuts On Them That They Think Came From A Prop On A Ship! It Is Nice To See Them In The River But It Is Not Where They Belong. They Had About Two To Three Thousand People On The Banks Watching Them Yesterday. Keep Your Fingers Crossed!
bralli Posted May 17, 2007 #2 Share Posted May 17, 2007 That's big news over here. Might as well cancel my whale watching trip and just drive down to the river for free! ;)
wilber1 Posted May 17, 2007 Author #3 Share Posted May 17, 2007 I know it is sort weird to see them like that, it was realy cool to watch them last night on the news as the sun was setting in the back ground and they would come up for air and blow water. JohnQ Posted May 19, 2007 #5 Share Posted May 19, 2007 I went down to the Port of Sacramento today to see our visiting Alaskan friends. Quite a site Got photos of the whales and the people. The first effort to lead the whales out with Alaskan whale singing didn't work: they went the other direction. Where is Cap Larry when you need him. They plan to leave them alone over the weekend and see what happens, and then on Tuesday, they will try something again. If the whale songs don't work, they will try to herd them back down to SF Bay. They have asked for people to stay away over the weekend but won't forbid it. There will be no water, restrooms, or anything. There had to be several hundred out there today in the little time I had this afternoon. Just thought you might like update. They don't act agitated or upset, but hard to say. No diving due to the shallow dept, but they are coming up very often and stay on surface for a bit, some times longer than the others. Hope to see them in Auke Bay in September. gg3 Posted May 30, 2007 #9 Share Posted May 30, 2007 I just read on MSNBC web site that it appears that Delta and Dawn have made their way into the ocean, as they have not been sighted in the Bay Area any longer. What wonderful news. If only they will just continue on their journey in the right direction. Also, I had read that the specialist watching them have noticed the algae that coated the mom, had been shed and that hopefully the wounds were beginning to heal with the return of the two into salt water. Good News, indeed :) . gg
Dale&Joan Posted May 30, 2007 #10 Share Posted May 30, 2007 Glad to hear they are OK. My brother is a captain of a state boat that takes marine biologists around. He was on the news and sending us articles about it.
