Will there ever been a smoke free cruise?

I would love to book a non smoking cruise since I do not smoke and never had, with that being said I wouldn't be able to sail with my husband because he does smoke. It is a nasty habit and I would love for him to quit but refuse to nag at him. He already knows just how bad smoking is for him. The one thing I can say about him is he never smokes in the house, we always get smoking free hotel rooms and he will not be smoking in our cabin. He always uses the designated smoking areas.

I never said that all smokers are chain smokers, I wrote, "especially if they are a chain smoker". You are reading things that aren't there. I was merely trying to explain to you how I can be bothered by smoke from smokers who are not right beside me. Why? because you expressed your disbelief that it was so.... Smoking is allowed in all Carnival (and most other lines) cabins.

 

I've never noticed the slightest hint of stale smoke odor when going into my cabin. I don't know what the stewards use, but it's really some powerful stuff!

 

You really don't hear anyone complaining about smoke odor in cabins.:)

I dont think Carnival will go down that road again. I dont smoke but my wife does. If she cant smoke she won't cruise

I agree.. I've never had any hint of smoke odor in any cabins I've stayed in. I'd also love to know what they use. I always bring Febreeze with me but have yet to use it.

In the larger hotel chains I stay in, they still have smoking rooms.

 

I don't think cruiselines will do this - at least not in my lifetime. Think of the lost revenue (think Paradise).;)

I counted, this is the 1000 000 post about smokeing and nothing changed. We still have people that smoke and ones that don't. Freedom is a funny thing, you sure do have lots of people trying to take it away from others. Like the political Correct group trying to take more freedom of speech away. Sort of same same. :D

Hoping no flames but here goes:

 

Hotel chains are completely banning smoking. Disneyworld just banned it in ALL hotel rooms. My guess is that sooner or later, the cruise lines will follow suit on this. It will probably be later than sooner, but I think it will be an eventuality. It might be gradual, maybe banning it in all the cabins and only allowing it on decks/balconies at first....heck, we never thought that restaurants and bars in many states would ban it, I think it's just logical that cruises will do it too.

 

You can't compare a hotel to a ship. If the hotel bans smoking you can always just go outside and smoke, if a cruise ship bans smoking where are the smokers going to go? They probably wouldn't cruise. It's an addiction and putting it down for 7 days to go on a cruise just isn't feasible. I don't think Carnival will ever ban smoking completely.

I am a non-smoker and I occasionally get headaches when I'm around smoke for an extended period of time, however, I will probably never go on a non-smoking ship ever again! I went on the Paradise a few years ago and have to say it was pretty boring. The ship and all it's activities were great, but the bars and dance floors were empty well before 10 pm and my husband and I found ourselves in the cabin wondering if we signed up for the no-party-here cruise! It was unbelievable! I'm not sure if there's a connection between smokers and party-goers but if there is, I'm traveling with the smokers and hope that they'll be considerate enough to not smoke beside me. :D

It was unbelievable! I'm not sure if there's a connection between smokers and party-goers but if there is, I'm traveling with the smokers and hope that they'll be considerate enough to not smoke beside me. :D

 

I agree! I don't smoke, but sure have lots more fun with my smoker friends than my non-smoker friends!!!:)

As I read the question you are asking if CCL will ever restrict smoking, not ban smoking. They already do restrict smoking. You can not smoke in the dining room, the auditorium, the shops and generally one side of the ship. There are many other locations were smoking is not permitted.

 

I am a smoker and since smoking is not allowed in most public businesses on land I actually feel uncomfortable smoking inside the ship. Even though it is permitted in the cabins I keep it to the bare minimum.

 

When on deck I do not light up near someone that is not smoking. I respect their space as I would expect a non-smoker to respect mine. There is about as much chance currently of having a non-smoking ship with Carnival as there is having a non-drinking ship.

I hope that the smokers on our cruise are as considerate as you are!

There in lies another problem the Paradise had, non-smokers don't travel in exclusive packs. There were lots of families, extended families and groups who wouldn't book the Paradise.

We also sailed on the Paradise when she was a non-smoker, it was a 10 day cruise. The ship was sold out, totally full and we had a great time not having to go back to the cabin smelling like smoke.

I could go either way on this one, I too find that some of my funnest friends are smokers, I do like to enjoy the occassional cigar :)

I sailed on the PARADISE Sep 5, 2004. That was her last non-smoking sailing. We sailed from Miami thru the canal ending in Long Beach [LA] Ca.

The PARADISE sailed for 5-8 years as a non-smoking only ship. Passengers had to sign a form that if they were caught smoking they would be put off at the next port with no compensation. When PARADISE was under construction, even the shipyard workers were not allowed to smoke on her. It was a noble experiment but she was the lowest revenue producer in Carnival's fleet and was banned to Ca. to do 3 and 4 day Mexico cruises with smoking allowed. Have never heard anything about her revenue production now.

Renaissance Cruise Line also had non-smoking ships, they are now out of business.:eek: I think some of her ships are now sailing for the aforementioned Azamara Cruises. Also think Princess has picked up a couple of their old ships. They had 7 I think, named Renaissance 1 thru 7. They got no headaches thinking up names.:D

Don't know if it's true, but a TA told me the reason Carnival ditched the non-smoking ship was because they weren't making enough money in the bars. I guess smokers drink more :rolleyes:

 

You know, I don't smoke, but when I'm drinking for long periods of time in a bar, I feel the desire to spark up; my boyfriend is a smoker, and when he drinks, he smokes about 5X more than usual! I don't know the science behind, or it its psychological, but for people who smoke, drinking makes you want to smoke more, and if you can't smoke and drink, yes, some peole will refuse to drink altogether, so they could have been losing money, I suppose...

I know this is a carnival board, but this is on topic. On a recent Caribbean Princess cruise they had "smoke free" night in the casino on Monday night of the cruise. It was great!

I would be completely in favor of that. I would wager that the turn for a non-smoking night would not be nearly what a smoking night brings in. Nicotine is a stimulant. Alcohol is a depressant. Smokers seem to party harder because they are wide-awake drunks.

 

I would love to see non-smoking bars on the ships. The only problem then would be that someone would complain that the smokers bar is in a prime location. How about converting the F-Deck to a "Smokers Only" deck. Please, no cameras allowed! I bet if Carnival brought back the "Top Optional" combined with "Smoking Only" there would be an outcry that "those people" get to have all the fun.
