Hilo help

We're renting a car from Thrifty for our day in Hilo (POH 06/11-06/18). We'd like to see VNP, Rainbow Falls, Big Island Candies, and Richardson's Beach with VNP being our priority. I was thinking we'd pick-up the car and head to Rainbow Falls via Banyan Dr. Then head down to VNP for several hours. Then head back to Hilo stopping at Big Island Candies and Richardson's to see the black sand (and eat the candy). Does this sound doable? Is it good to go to Rainbow Falls first? Would it take too long if we go there via Banyan Dr. or should we skip that? Any better ideas for route to these places...

Aloha,

Rainbow Falls is on one end of Hilo Town (the far side from the airport) and if it has just rained within the last few days, is a great falls to visit. You go via Banyan and then come back via Banyan to catch the road to VNP.

If you don't spend too @ Rainbow Falls, you can head up to VNP (the road to VNP is the one you catch as you come out of the airport). Definitely a must see.

Big Island Candies is in town, so catching this on the way back is a good idea. I don't know about Richardson's Beach as I haven't heard of it so can't make a suggestion there.

Hope you enjoy your stay.

We just got back from the Pride of ALoha a couple weeks ago. We rented a car from Thrifty in Hilo. We ordered a compact and got upgraded to full size. Renting at Thrify went smooth.

We went straight to VNP and spent about 2 1/2 - 3 hours there and love it. We did not go down Rim of the craters road towards the ocean because we wanted to do other things. We went to Akaka falls which is about 25 min. north the other direction of Hilo. IT was the most beautiful waterfall on our trip. Then we went on the 4 mile scenic drive around Akaka Falls and back to the ship with little time to spare. It was worth it though.
