Has anyone ever had their wallet or purse stolen?

Recommended Posts

Going to Cozumel & Progresso on the 30th. Wondering if any men have been pick-pocketed or women had something stolen out of their purse while at port or in town? I have been thinking about buying a "dummy" wallet just to play it safe. :( maybe I don't have anything to worry about.

I've been on the boards awhile now, and I don't recall anyone reporting having anything stolen while in ports. Just be careful, as you would anywhere. Keep that purse zipped, just as a precautionary measure. :)

I would buy that "DUMMY" wallet, in Cozumel one of the girls in my "group" had her purse stolen and apart from cash, ID, etc...she also had some "DVD's" we had just edited on the ship.

Maybe 2 "DUMMY" wallets might be an even better idea, I know you have psycho as part of your screen-name but there is nothing psycho about having stuff stolen....so go ahead and stick with your plan

Just use your common sense. Progreso and the Yucatan state is very safe. The people are very gentle and proud of their history and culture. In Merida, pop one million, state capitol and home to four universitys, most street cops do not even carry sidearms. Check out http://www.yucatantoday.com. It's a great area to visit. Also checkout the Ports of Call Boards for Progreso/Merida.

In 19 Caribbean cruises, I've never had any kind of problem.

I don't ever take a regular purse off the ship anymore. I bought a small rectangular zippered cloth bag that I put my sail and sign card, credit card, cash and any medication I might need into. I wear it around my neck. (This is a little less cumbersome than the plastic waterproof ones.) If I'm anywhere that looks "suspicious" I slip the small bag under my shirt. I also carry a 12 X 8 cloth bag - I purchased in port once. I put my camera, bottle of water and some of my purchases in there. It's open at the top...obviously not a purse. My husband has never been pickpocketed either.

My friend had her diamond bracelet removed from her wrist when a friendly Dominican shook her hand! She didn't notice until she walked away that it was removed!! Luckily, she had travel insurance, but to this day she still cant believe that happened so quick and easily.

I have a strange 'lost' wallet story...I'll be quick.

Way back in "50's" I went to San Diego from NYC with an aunt to visit my cousin in the Navy. I lost my wallet in Kresge's (?) 5 & 10 and in it I had $13, my driver's license and photo's of friends and family. Two+ years later (at least!), back in NY, I got a small, brown paper wrapped package with a Virginia return address. I opened it to find that long-lost wallet. None the worse for age, it contained my DL and the photo's..no $13 of course. There was no note or explanation but I penned a thank you to the address on the box, explaining how long ago I'd lost it and where, and asked if they would mind letting my know how they came across it. I never heard back.

I consider this my 'unsolved mystery'...thanks for baring with me.

 I can't imagine wearing that kind of jewelry when visiting a port....seems it would be just asking to be stolen. Some thieves are very clever...it's their life's work. Glad she got reimbused for it.

While in St Thomas last year my niece had $450.00 stolen out of her backpack while shopping at the ouside vendors mart. Someone bumped into her backpack and when she turned around the man apologized. Later when she went into a shop to make a purchase her wallet was gone. All this happened in seconds

As others have said, I don't carry a purse. I put everything in my front pocket. Now if we are headed to a beach, I have the beach bag, but my valuables are around my neck under my shirt.

We were in line at the Vatican Museum and a women was showing us her purse. It had been cut with a knife or razor while she was on the Metro (Rome's subway). She had it tucked tightly under her arm when it was cut and her wallet removed. So even when you are being careful, it can happen.

While cruising on the Holiday last month, I experienced a case of extreme honesty in Cozumel.

When I went to return my rental car, I discovered that my wallet, with my driver's license, sail & sign ship card, and credit cards, was missing.

The Avis guy, who was supposed to be on his siesta, couldn't have been nicer as I repeatedly searched the car and my beach bag in a panic, thinking I would not be able to get back on the ship with no ID or ship card.

Then I remembered that I had jumped out of the car at the gas station for a second to see which side of the car the tank was on and realized that my wallet might have fallen out of the car there. We hurried to the gas station and there was my wallet! It was just sitting on top of the middle gas pump, along with what looked like a US passport and some other "lost and found" objects.

Although all of the gas station employees had access, nothing was missing. I can't imagine this type of honesty in the US.

When in Puerto Vallarta on a land vacation my uncle unknowingly dropped his wallet and the passerby who found it went to two hotels looking for the owner. That being said, most people are honest wherever you are but also many are not, so i always wear my valuables around my neck. Kris

YES, we were at Atlantis in Nassau. Thinking we were in the safest of places. I left my wallet in a backpack and my wife had some loose cash in the same pocket. Someone unzipped the pocket and took it all while we were in a lazy river. In all I lost my wallett and we lost about $100. It was obviously a worker. Lesson learned better safe than sorry and I keep everything of value on me in a waterproof puch. Atlantis did comp us a couple of day passes when we were back 4 months later. The worst part of it was that we had to have a policeman escort us to the ship since all ID was gone, but I had a backup in the room once I got back onboard.

ok this is what happened to me on my last cruise in May on the Elation.

My credit card numbers were stolen out of the safe while I was at Port. My husband I left all of our credit cards in the safe and being the dummy that we are, we left the card key that opened it in the drawer of the nightstand. We called Carnival to alert them that we had reason to believe that our steward copied our credit card numbers down. The reason we suspect them is that this was a brand new card...just recieved and activiated a couple of days before the cruise. The only time we had use it was to establish our sign and sail account. However, the day after the cruise, there was over 2,000 dollars in charges...mostly made over the net.

Carnival is still in the process of investigating, but the lesson I have learned is to NOT leave it in the safe....I will be taking my wallet with me from now on

I hope this doesnt happen to anyone else.

My mother gave me the world's ugliest purse for my birthday to take on vacation. I was hoping someone would steal it from me while in Puerto Rico last summer. I left it (of course with nothing inside) on a park bench and someone kindly returned it to me. Then I purposely left it on the sand while taking pictures on a city tour-again a nice local person returned it to me. I have resigned my self to carrying the purse. On the good side it restored my faith in humanity.

On my first cruise within the first hour or so of getting on the ship one of my friends had her purse stolen. It was sitting on the floor beside her at the tables near the pizza station. It was later turned in to the purser minus the money.

How about carrying a fanny pack? I know it isnt a fasion statement but who care's. It carrys what you need to carry.

John

I don't recommend it. It's one of the easiest items to pickpocket and it sort of "marks" you as a tourist. They just distract you and someone unzips it while you're looking the other way.
