Mayan Princess / Snorkeling on own - advice

We have a stop in Roatan at the end of August. Here is my thought on the day. It is for 2 adults (me and my mom). Advice/suggestions?

Take a taxi to Mayan Princess in the morning. Snorkel off the shore and relax at the resort. I've heard great things about the snorkeling in Roatan so I assume we will probably stay there until at least early afternoon.

Take the water taxi to West End to look around, visit a few of the shops (we are not shoppers though) and perhaps have lunch if we have not already at Mayan Princess.

Catch a cab back to the ship area and walk around a bit (if time permits).

1. Take a taxi or is it better to "hire" a guide for the day and not take the water taxi?? Doing this I suppose we could make a few extra stops for "photo ops".

2. Mayan Princess - I read some reviews written here over the last few months - any recent reviews or the resort and the snorkeling experience off the beach?

3. Any other advice/suggestions?
