Oops! Gypsy, just looked at your original post and realized you wanted someplace within walking distance of Harbour Centre.

In which case, Diva at the Met (fine dining) is probably closest; though a short cab ride would get you to most of the restaurants I listed and give you more options.

Thanks Ell
I guess I should have mentioned that we are a large group of 18 with four children ages 3-15. Fine dining might be the best bet this evening.maybe DH and I can check it or one of the others for our 21st Anniversary which is the 29th!!!

Gypsy, for a large, mixed group like yours, you could try the Keg (on Thurlow); Earl's (on Robson); or the Boathouse at English Bay (a bit further away, but worth it for the view).

These are all casual places with good food and lively atmosphere that should accomodate most tastes.

I'd make sure to call ahead and make reservations for such a large group - otherwise you may end up waiting a long time!

ajdegumbia,

The Boathouse is mainly a seafood restaurant but they have a good selection of land-based items as well. We've always found the food to be consistently good (most recently went for Mother's Day).

The English Bay location is on Beach Avenue and is on the 2nd floor, so you get a great view of the bay. If you time it right you can see a fabulous sunset or a glimpse of the cruise ships as they leave the inner harbour. It's also a great area to walk and people-watch - being near both Stanley Park and Robson St.

Happy to answer any other questions you might have.

It looks like "C" is fairly close to where we are staying (Residence Inn, Marriott on Hornby). I love fine dining, but am a little concerned with the price. Can anyone let me know of the price range there, it looks a little pricey. Also, any other possibilities in my area. I'm not exactly looking for cheap, I prefer good food at moderate prices. We like Italian, Chinese, seafood, steak, Mexican.

Thanks!

Kathy,

Yes, C is quite pricey. Another very good seafood place near you would be A Kettle of Fish. Prices are more moderate than C. It's on Pacific at Hornby - within easy walking distance of your hotels.

Can also someone give me a few ideas for a dinner for 8. 6 adults 2 kids. Nothing too pricy and that's kid friendly. We are staying at the Renisannce. Would prefer some "local" favorite restaurant rather than a chain.

Thanks to everyone.

Most of the places on Robson can handle that many people.Go for a walk, check out the menus and enjoy! If you are willing to take a bus, then there are many other choices.

Time for another Cruise!

We will be staying at the Weston Bayshore. Any recommendations for moderately priced
restaurants (espcially seafood) in our neighborhood? We are a group of six and would like to be able to walk to dinner for our two nights in Vancouver. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Walk up the street-by the hotel- and right on the corner you will see a place called White Spot. Good food-great mushroom burgers! If you turn right on the corner and walk down to Denman, you find tons of great places to eat. Try Cafe De Paris for the best Pomme Frites this side of Paris! See if the have fresh mussels and WOW-what a great meal!Go up Denman till you hit the water and on the left you will find The Boathouse-They are having a crab special on right now and usually have some sort of seafood special on. After dinner walk down the other side of Denman and have some great Italian Gelato or some good coffee for dessert.IT is safe to walk around in the Summer, stay on Main streets and don't do things you wouldn't do at home/ You will find the West End a very bustling Gay community and you have great people watching in that area.

Time for another Cruise!

quote:
Any good recommendations for lunch in China Town?

Okay, for what it's worth, I want to preface my comments by saying I'm a 3rd-generation Chinese-Cdn, born and raised in Vancouver and my DH has many clients in the Chinatown area. Therefore, we dine out a lot in both Asian and non-Asian restaurants.

Are you interested in something hole-in-the-wall for homestyle cooking, noodles, and won-tun, that's frequented mostly by local Chinese?

If you are, then try Kam Gok Yuen at 142 E. Pender. It's not fancy (has old-style formica tabletops, etc.), but the food is good and the won-tun is better than the much-touted Hon's on Robson. You can also get good BBQ meats for take-out.

About 4 doors up (east) from Kam Gok Yuen is New Town Bakery. It's both a bakery and restaurant and is also popular with locals. A favourite thing to do on Sunday is to have lunch then buy bakery goods to take home. New Town is a bit more well-known and tends to be busier because of the bakery. Try the apple tarts- yumm!

There aren't any really good dim sum places in Chinatown. Floata gets a lot of recommendations ONLY because it's in Chinatown - but Floata has very mediocre dim sum compared to other restaurants that are outside downtown or in Richmond.

Just outside Chinatown, The Pink Pearl on East Hastings is better. Better yet, is Sun Sui Wah on Main Street, Kirin on Cambie & 12th, or even The Flamingo on south Cambie. These are all restaurants you can get to by taxi or bus. But if you really like good dim sum, it'll be worth the effort.

In the downtown area, Imperial Seafood in the Marine Building on Burrard used to be very good. I haven't been for awhile, but it's an elegant room with a nice view. Only 1 1/2 blocks from Canada Place.

Otherwise, I'd recommend going out of the downtown/Chinatown area.

I wouldn't discount the chains. The Boathouse, The Keg, The Old Spaghetti Factory, and White Spot are all "local" favourites. Even though they are chains (small ones except for the Keg), they all originated in Vancouver and have retained much of what made them popular to begin with. They also fit your criteria for not too pricy and kid friendly (esp. The Old Spaghetti Factory and White Spot). There's always Chinese restaurants, as grouchy mentioned previously - that are always kid-friendly.

It's Samba Brazilian Churrascaria. They have a website, under Samba I think. They are at 1122 Alberni St (604)696-9888. If it's anything like the one we ate at in Manhattan, it is worth it. Go in hungry, don't fill up on the salad bar or the first meats they bring out (chicken, sausage etc.) Wait for the good stuff! The restaurant in Manhattan also served a traditional Brazilian cocktail made with a rum-like alcohol and lots of fresh lime. Yummy!
